Job description

AD Product Management - EM07CE

We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals – and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

Do you have a passion for leaving things better than you found them? Are you innovative and find gratification in seeing your strategies come to life? This is your opportunity to give those passions and talents new purpose by applying them to meaningful work at The Hartford.

The Hartford’s Personal Insurance business provides automobile, homeowners and personal umbrella coverages to individuals across the United States. The business includes The AARP® Automobile and Homeowners Insurance Program serving more than 37 million members.

The Personal Insurance Product Assistant Director has profit and loss responsibility for our auto and homeowner’s insurance products for specific states within an assigned geography. This role will be responsible for the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Their ideas, insights, and ability to execute a strategic vision and foster change directly impacts our business and our shareholders. In addition to developing and executing a strategic vision that enable long-term success, this role is intimately involved in setting prices, designing product features, and articulating the type of business that the company should target for profitable growth in their assigned states.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive Financial Results.  Accountable for delivering topline growth at target margins across the Direct and Agency distribution channels in their assigned states.  Identifies new business opportunities and strategic options for growth, and influences partner organizations such as Underwriting, Marketing, Sales, and IT to generate growth in profitable customer segments and to improve profitability in underperforming cells.
  • State Management.  Oversee state management of the rate level, class plan segmentation, and coverage offerings of our Auto, Home, and Umbrella products in assigned geographies.  Establish operating budgets at the state level, and regularly report out on results to senior management.  Build deep understanding of local markets and unique regulatory requirements to create competitive advantages in each state.
  • Continuous Product Enhancement.  Seek out underlying drivers of poor performance and deploy pricing or product changes to improve results.  Highlight state issues to Auto and Home Line teams to evaluate multistate impacts, and provide thought leadership on countrywide initiatives.  Deploy countrywide standing orders to bring pricing or product enhancements into assigned states with state-specific adjustments where needed.
  • Executive Communication.  Actively monitor assigned states and present key results to senior leaders.  Establish expectations for topline and bottom-line impacts of pricing or product changes, identify deviations from expected results, and develop action plans to restore growth and profit metrics to target levels.  Deliver compelling and succinct communications to executive audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the P&C insurance industry, and 2+ years in Product or P&L Management is required.  Experience in pricing, underwriting or data & analytics is a plus.
  • A strong understanding of Personal Lines insurance products, coverages, and distribution channels including Direct-to-consumer and Agency.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong business and financial acumen.  Familiarity with financial statements (income statement, 10K, annual statement) and actuarial concepts (indications, loss development, credibility).
  • Familiarity with data and database procedures such as ThoughtSpot
  • Strong Excel skills required.  Knowledge of SQL, SAS and Snowflake beneficial.
  • Strong presentation, storytelling, and executive communication skills.  Ability to create concise but powerful content and visuals to influence a range of audiences.
  • Excellent relationship management skills with an emphasis on collaborating to drive results.
  • Demonstrated experience challenging the status quo and broadly influencing key stakeholders to drive change and innovation.  Ability to make evidence-based decisions quickly with imperfect information.
  • Knowledge of local marketplaces, including state-specific regulations and filing requirements.
  • This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near one of our Hub office locations will have the expectation of working in an office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
