Job description

SUMMARY: SUMMARY: Under the direction of the HIM Department Director and Coding Supervisor, maintains clinical databases through coding and abstracting of medical records. Assigns appropriate CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS codes in accordance with Official Coding Guidelines, CMS guidelines and internal policies. Demonstrates ability to determine first listed diagnosis, secondary diagnosis, and surgical procedures. The HIM Facility Coder collaborates with Revenue Integrity and Patient Financial Services to resolve edits, verify code accuracy and ensure claim processing. Receives and responds to educational feedback identified by Coding Compliance and Education. Achieves quality and quantity production standards, participates in professional development efforts, and maintains knowledge of medical record and provider documentation to maximize coding specificity with query opportunities.
EXPERIENCE:1-3 years of facility medical coding and/or billing experience preferred. Proficient knowledge of 3M and Oracle Cerner preferred. Working knowledge of Official Coding Guidelines and CMS guidelines. Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, compliance and reimbursement guidelines. SPECIALSKILLS:Proficient computer skills, including Excel. Ability to learn and adapt to new software systems.
OTHER:Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work well within a team and independently.
LICENSE/CERT: Preferred: CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
EDUCATION: Required: Associates - Health Information Management, Associates - Related Field, Equivalent Experience - equivalent combination of professional certification & job experience., Preferred: Bachelors - Related Field
