What is the difference between Remote Infrastructure Asset Management vs Remote Network Operations?

AspectRemote Infrastructure Asset ManagementRemote Network Operations
Primary FocusManaging physical and digital infrastructure assets, including servers, data centers, and hardwareMonitoring and maintaining network performance, security, and connectivity
Required SkillsAsset lifecycle management, hardware/software knowledge, asset trackingNetwork protocols, security, troubleshooting, and monitoring tools
CertificationsIT Asset Management certifications, CompTIA Server+, Cisco CCNANetwork certifications like Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+

While both roles involve remote work within IT infrastructure, Remote Infrastructure Asset Management focuses on managing physical and digital assets throughout their lifecycle, whereas Remote Network Operations centers on maintaining network performance and security. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus.

What is remote infrastructure asset management?

Remote infrastructure asset management is the process of monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing physical and digital assets—such as servers, networks, and hardware—from a remote location. This approach uses specialized software and tools to track asset performance, manage lifecycles, and ensure systems are running efficiently without needing on-site presence. It helps organizations reduce downtime, improve resource allocation, and lower operational costs while maintaining robust infrastructure oversight. The role often involves using cloud-based solutions, IoT devices, and automation technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Remote Infrastructure Asset Management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Infrastructure Asset Management, you need a strong background in asset lifecycle management, data analysis, and infrastructure systems, typically supported by a degree in engineering, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with asset management software (such as IBM Maximo or SAP EAM), GIS platforms, and remote monitoring tools is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like IAM or ISO 55001. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help professionals coordinate across teams and address issues proactively. These skills ensure efficient operation, cost control, and risk mitigation for distributed infrastructure assets.

What are some common challenges faced in a Remote Infrastructure Asset Management role, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in Remote Infrastructure Asset Management is ensuring accurate, real-time visibility of assets that are geographically dispersed. This requires effective use of digital tools and strong communication with on-site teams. Additionally, coordinating maintenance and responding to unexpected issues remotely can be demanding, so developing robust processes for remote diagnostics and leveraging IoT technologies is vital. Building strong relationships with local stakeholders and continuously updating asset records also help in overcoming these challenges.

Job Description

Shape the Future of Trusted Access at Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame is looking for a driven, detail-oriented Identity and Access Management (IAM) Administrator to join our award-winning Office of Information Technology (OIT). In this role, you'll take hands-on ownership of day-to-day operations, ticket resolution, and core security configurations across our enterprise identity infrastructures-safeguarding user access and securing the University's digital assets.

You will take ownership of daily operational requirements to ensure continuous delivery across major team initiatives, making sure the right people have the right access, to the right resources, at the right time, and in the right context. If you are a technical professional with a few years of identity experience under your belt, eager to run cutting-edge platforms and support a robust, multi-year security roadmap, this is your opportunity to drive meaningful impact at one of the top IT workplaces in the nation.

What You'll Do

  • Power Core Identity Operations - Execute day-to-day administration, ticket management, and complete user lifecycle provisioning/de-provisioning across Okta, AD, and Entra ID.

  • Enforce Trusted Access - Administer and monitor adaptive, real-time access policies under Notre Dame's Zero Trust Framework, leveraging shared signal frameworks and device-posture compliance.

  • Scale with Automation & AI - Leverage modern, built-in AI features to monitor queues, flag anomalies, and optimize automated user-matching logic. Run, maintain, and modify PowerShell or Python scripts to automate repetitive tasks and handle high-volume data cleanups.

  • Respond with Agility - Triage, troubleshoot, and resolve daily support requests, authentication incidents, and sync errors escalated by the OIT Service Desk or campus users.

  • Support Next-Gen Initiatives - Assist in implementing critical security pipelines, including managing user scopes and permission boundaries within our Privileged Access Management (PAM) infrastructure.

  • Secure the Cloud Ecosystem - Onboard cloud-based SaaS and on-premise applications using established, secure integration templates.

  • Drive Compliance & Clarity - Support comprehensive user privilege audits and access reviews while developing clear, user-friendly operational runbooks and documentation.

  • Ensure 24/7 Protection - Provide critical after-hours and on-call operational support as part of a regular team rotation to ensure high availability of our critical identity platforms.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has been recognized for thirteen consecutive years in IDG's Insider Pro and Computerworld's best places to work in IT. At Notre Dame, we believe in creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field (or an equivalent combination of education and professional IT experience).

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in an Information Technology domain, with a clear focus on hands-on Identity and Access Management execution.

  • Demonstrated experience in day-to-day administration of enterprise identity platforms, such as Okta, Active Directory, or Entra ID.

  • Hands-on familiarity with handling user requests, troubleshooting authentication/authorization errors, and modifying access settings.

  • Work authorization in the United States and the ability to work without visa sponsorship, now and in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IAM technologies in a Higher Education environment.

  • Familiarity with conditional access environments utilizing shared signal frameworks, endpoint management states, or GlobalProtect VPN settings.

  • Basic awareness of Privileged Access Management (PAM) administration or tooling.

  • Familiarity with leveraging AI or machine-learning tools for user analytics or threat detection within identity ecosystems.

  • Proficiency writing or running scripts (PowerShell, Python, or JSON) to drive lifecycle automation workflows.
