Job description

Consulting Associate

Most grantmakers don't know what's actually working. This is the analytical engine that helps change that.

Snapshot

  • Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid, mostly remote; candidates should be based near DC)
  • Engagement: Full-time, direct hire
  • Compensation: $90,000 starting
  • Benefits: Comprehensive healthcare, flexible vacation, remote work, 401(k)

About the Role

We're looking for an analytically strong Associate to work directly with government clients (federal agencies, states, and other funding bodies) on outcomes measurement and evidence-informed grantmaking. You'll work alongside Managers and Directors on real client problems: building measurement frameworks, analyzing program portfolios, and translating data into decisions. This is a consulting role, not a research or policy position. You'll move fast, adapt often, and produce polished work for senior audiences. This role fits someone early in their career with subject-matter grounding in evaluation, data, or social impact, who is energized by ambiguity rather than slowed by it. You'll have real ownership from day one and exposure to clients and leadership.

What You'll Own

  • Analyze and support. Apply subject-matter expertise in evaluation, data analysis, performance measurement, or impact measurement. Support the development of strategic frameworks, assessments, and recommendations, and conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis on outcomes, performance, and effectiveness.
  • Produce client deliverables. Build clear, accurate, well-structured slides, memos, and visualizations. Synthesize complex information into concise insights for public-sector audiences, and prepare materials for meetings and working sessions.
  • Drive projects forward. Support Managers in executing plans against aggressive timelines, track tasks and dependencies, and collaborate across strategy and data-focused roles.
  • Grow fast. Build mastery in core consulting skills (data analysis, measurement frameworks, portfolio optimization), develop your understanding of public-sector funding and grantmaking, and contribute to internal tools, templates, and repeatable approaches.

What You Bring

  • 2 to 3 years in consulting, professional services, or public-sector roles
  • Subject-matter experience in evaluation, data analysis, impact measurement, financial analysis, or related areas
  • Interest in domestic social policy, grantmaking, or public-sector funding
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • A self-starter orientation: you own work end to end, move without being pushed, and thrive when the path isn't fully paved

Bonus Points

  • Experience in the nonprofit, social sector, or philanthropic space, in any capacity
  • Familiarity with national service, AmeriCorps, or domestic grantmaking programs
  • Quantitative skills (Excel, Stata, R, or similar) and comfort turning data into clear narratives for non-technical audiences
  • Experience using AI tools in analytical or research workflows
