Job description

The Senior IBM i Series IT Administrator will provide senior level administration and operational support for enterprise IBM i environments. This role focuses on platform stability, security, performance, and availability while partnering with application, infrastructure, and client teams. The engagement is expected to begin as a one year contract with the potential to convert to a full time role with the end client based on business needs and performance.
Responsibilities:
  • Install, configure, and maintain IBM i operating environments across physical and virtual LPAR platforms.
  • Apply Program Temporary Fixes, cumulative fix packs, and technology refresh updates following change management standards.
  • Manage logical partitions, system values, subsystems, memory pools, and workload configurations.
  • Monitor system health, disk utilization, auxiliary storage pool usage, and resource thresholds using Collection Services and Performance Tools for IBM i.
  • Maintain system documentation, standard operating procedures, and configuration baselines.
  • Administer IBM i security including user and group profiles, object authority, adopted authority, and special authority management.
  • Configure and maintain system auditing, security exit programs, and compliance reporting aligned with client and regulatory standards.
  • Design and manage BRMS backup strategies including full, incremental, and journal based backups.
  • Administer high availability and disaster recovery solutions and participate in recovery testing exercises.
  • Administer DB2 for IBM i including schema management, database performance tuning, journaling, and SQL optimization.
  • Manage IBM i networking services including TCP IP configuration, DNS, FTP and secure file transfer services.
  • Support job scheduling and automation using enterprise scheduling tools and custom CL based automation.
  • Collaborate with development teams supporting RPG, COBOL, SQL, and Java workloads.
  • Serve as a senior technical advisor for IBM i infrastructure initiatives, assessments, and migrations.
  • Mentor junior administrators and contribute to knowledge sharing within the IBM i practice.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in information technology or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Eight or more years of hands on IBM i system administration experience in enterprise environments.
  • Expert knowledge of IBM i operating system versions 7.3, 7.4, and 7.5.
  • Demonstrated expertise with BRMS backup and recovery planning and execution.
  • Advanced experience administering DB2 for IBM i including SQL, DDS, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with IBM i high availability solutions such as MIMIX, iTera, or PowerHA.
  • Advanced skills in CL programming, job scheduling, and workload automation.
  • Strong understanding of IBM i security architecture, auditing, and compliance practices.
  • Experience supporting TCP IP networking, IBM Access Client Solutions, and IBM i Access services.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document and present technical information.
Preferred
  • IBM Certified Systems Expert for IBM i or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with IBM Power Systems hardware, virtual IO server, and hardware management console administration.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices on IBM i including RDi, source control, and continuous integration workflows.
  • Experience supporting regulated environments such as healthcare, financial services, or public sector organizations.
  • Prior consulting or client facing experience within managed services or professional services organizations.
