Remote Hydroelectric Dam information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote hydroelectric dam operations?

Professionals in remote hydroelectric dam operations often encounter challenges such as limited on-site support and the need to troubleshoot technical issues independently. Working remotely can also mean managing complex systems via SCADA and other monitoring tools while ensuring regulatory compliance from a distance. Effective communication with engineering teams and field technicians is crucial to coordinate maintenance, resolve outages, and optimize power generation. Adapting to shifting priorities, staying updated on safety protocols, and being proactive about preventive maintenance are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hydroelectric Dam Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hydroelectric Dam Operator, you need knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, power generation processes, and a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with SCADA systems, turbine controls, and safety protocols is essential for daily operations. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for monitoring systems and responding to issues promptly. These skills ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable production of hydroelectric power while minimizing downtime and hazards.

What is the difference between Remote Hydroelectric Dam vs Remote Hydroelectric Plant Operator?

AspectRemote Hydroelectric DamRemote Hydroelectric Plant Operator
CredentialsEngineering degree or technical certificationTechnical training, operator certification

Industry UsageDesign, construction, and maintenance of damsOperation and monitoring of hydroelectric facilities

Remote Hydroelectric Dams focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of dam infrastructure, often requiring engineering expertise. In contrast, Remote Hydroelectric Plant Operators primarily monitor and control the plant's operations to ensure efficient energy production. Both roles may involve remote work and require technical certifications, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are remote hydroelectric dam operators?

Remote hydroelectric dam operators are professionals who monitor and control the operations of hydroelectric dams from a distance, often using advanced software and communication systems. Their responsibilities include regulating water flow, managing power generation, ensuring equipment safety, and responding to emergencies or system alerts. This remote work setup allows for real-time oversight of multiple facilities, enhancing efficiency and reducing the need for on-site staff.

Job description

Strategic Advisor - Hydropower and Dam Infrastructure

Location: Independent Contractor - Remote

About us

At Niricson, we are redefining the future of civil infrastructure maintenance. Using proprietary sensing technology and AI-powered analytics, we help asset owners make smarter, faster, and safer decisions for critical infrastructure such as bridges, dams and spillways, tunnels, airfields, and more.

As we scale across North America and beyond, we are seeking experienced, well-connected industry advisors to guide our growth, validate our approach, and connect us with the people and problems that matter most.

About the role

We are looking for a Strategic Advisor with deep expertise in hydroelectric or dam condition assessments and asset management. Ideally, someone with experience in asset ownership, engineering leadership, public works, or large-scale infrastructure portfolios.

This is a flexible, advisory engagement. You will work closely with Niricson's Chief Sales Officer and leadership team to provide strategic insights, industry credibility, and introductions that accelerate our market penetration and alignment with customer needs. The advisor will be expected to provide information on how specific clients make decisions, who the key decision makers are, and when key opportunities are expected to be announced. The advisor may also provide information on proper positioning and messaging to key decision-makers.

This role is perfect for someone semi-retired, transitioning from public service or consulting independently, who wants to remain engaged in the industry in a meaningful capacity.

Key Contributions

  • Provide strategic information on proper messaging, decision-makers, and bidding opportunities for clients.
  • Advise on engagement strategies with municipal, provincial, and federal infrastructure bodies
  • Offer industry insights on market trends, procurement processes, and regulatory considerations for positioning Niricson's Product
  • Support credibility-building with potential clients (e.g., participate in key meetings, webinars, and white papers)
  • Introduce Niricson to relevant stakeholders and potential partners such as utility operators, water authorities, and dam safety regulators
  • Collaborate on industry events, speaking opportunities, or roundtables where relevant
  • Offer independent feedback on product-market fit and key customer pain points
  • Provide introductions to key decision makers and leadership

Who You Are

  • 15+ years of experience in hydroelectric power generation, dam safety, water infrastructure asset management, or public sector leadership
  • Former Director, Executive, or Asset Owner in a relevant agency or organization
  • Deep understanding of government procurement processes and operational realities of asset management
  • Respected in the industry, with an established professional network
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Comfortable working independently under a services agreement (not as an employee)

Engagement Structure

This is an independent contractor role and is not considered employment under Canadian law.

As such:

  • You will enter into a subcontract for services with Niricson
  • You will invoice for your time collaborating with the team
  • You are responsible for your own tax filings, business registration, and applicable insurance

What We Offer

  • A chance to influence the future of civil infrastructure and condition maintenance
  • A collaborative and respectful leadership team that values your expertise
  • Flexible, remote engagement
  • Competitive advisory compensation structure
  • Opportunity to help shape safer, longer-lasting infrastructure around the world

Diversity and Inclusion

Niricson values the unique experience of professionals from all backgrounds. We strongly encourage expressions of interest from equity-deserving groups, including indigenous peoples, racialized individuals, women, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

We're a close-knit, mission-driven team that celebrates curiosity, diversity, and excellence.
