Remote Hydroelectric Dam information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote hydroelectric dam operations?

Professionals in remote hydroelectric dam operations often encounter challenges such as limited on-site support and the need to troubleshoot technical issues independently. Working remotely can also mean managing complex systems via SCADA and other monitoring tools while ensuring regulatory compliance from a distance. Effective communication with engineering teams and field technicians is crucial to coordinate maintenance, resolve outages, and optimize power generation. Adapting to shifting priorities, staying updated on safety protocols, and being proactive about preventive maintenance are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hydroelectric Dam Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hydroelectric Dam Operator, you need knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, power generation processes, and a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with SCADA systems, turbine controls, and safety protocols is essential for daily operations. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for monitoring systems and responding to issues promptly. These skills ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable production of hydroelectric power while minimizing downtime and hazards.

What is the difference between Remote Hydroelectric Dam vs Remote Hydroelectric Plant Operator?

AspectRemote Hydroelectric DamRemote Hydroelectric Plant Operator
CredentialsEngineering degree or technical certificationTechnical training, operator certification
Work EnvironmentDam site, control rooms, remote monitoring stationsControl rooms, remote monitoring stations
Industry UsageDesign, construction, and maintenance of damsOperation and monitoring of hydroelectric facilities

Remote Hydroelectric Dams focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of dam infrastructure, often requiring engineering expertise. In contrast, Remote Hydroelectric Plant Operators primarily monitor and control the plant's operations to ensure efficient energy production. Both roles may involve remote work and require technical certifications, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are remote hydroelectric dam operators?

Remote hydroelectric dam operators are professionals who monitor and control the operations of hydroelectric dams from a distance, often using advanced software and communication systems. Their responsibilities include regulating water flow, managing power generation, ensuring equipment safety, and responding to emergencies or system alerts. This remote work setup allows for real-time oversight of multiple facilities, enhancing efficiency and reducing the need for on-site staff.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a key player for FERC Part 12D inspections and Comprehensive Assessments.
  • Conduct dam safety evaluations in accordance with guidelines from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) or State Agencies.
  • Perform and review hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling, including spillway capacity and PMF evaluations.
  • Conduct structural and geotechnical analyses of dam structures, hydraulic gates, embankment, concrete, and appurtenant structures.
  • Identify potential failure modes and participate in risk-informed decision-making processes.
  • Develop recommendations for dam rehabilitation, stability improvements, seepage mitigation, and spillway upgrades.
  • Lead design of new and/or rehabilitation of hydraulic structures, dams, spillways, gates, retaining walls, water conveyance structures, foundations.
  • Lead technical development, licensing, and compliance efforts for hydroelectric projects with FERC and/or State Agencies.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies, owners, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, inspection documentation, and regulatory filings.
  • Provide construction support services including submittal review, site inspections, and quality assurance.
  • Attend client meetings (both virtually and in-person).
  • Travel as required but not expected to exceed 25%.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

What We Offer:
  • A supportive and inclusive work environment that values diversity and encourages innovation.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, 401(k) with company match, tuition reimbursement, and flexible work schedules.
  • This position pays between $120,000 and $165,000 annually and is an exempt position. Benefits offered include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plan with company match. Also offered are tuition reimbursement, voluntary life, disability, critical illness, accident and hospitalization plans. HSA or FSA medical accounts and FSA dependent care and transportation/parking accounts are also available. These benefits are subject to employee contribution amounts generally set annually. Full-time employees are eligible to earn PTO hours. May be eligible for discretionary bonus as determined by the company.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited university (with emphasis in structural, geotechnical, or water resources engineering).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; multiple state registrations preferred.
  • Minimum 8-15 years of experience in hydropower and dam engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting an IC under FERC Part 12D.
  • Strong knowledge of FERC Dam Safety Guidelines and risk-informed decision-making processes.
  • Concrete and steel design experience.
  • Experience with H&H modeling software (HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS), slope stability software, and structural analysis tools.
  • Experience with embankment dams, concrete gravity dams, spillways, outlet works, and hydroelectric facilities.
  • Must have a valid driver's license without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • FERC approved Independent Consultant (IC) experience not required but considered a plus.
  • Penstock, safety valve and/or hydroelectric powerhouse experience.
  • Experience with RISA 3D, STAAD.Pro, ANSYS or other structural modelling software.
  • Experience in AutoCAD, Microstation or other 2D and 3D modelling software (drafting will likely not be part of your role, but experience with the software our drafters and designers use is still very valuable).

This role is designated as remote, giving you the flexibility to primarily work from home while staying actively connected to your team and projects. We value collaboration and responsiveness, so we ask our remote team members to be available when in-office presence is needed-such as for client meetings, team events, or training sessions. Our approach blends freedom with shared accountability, making ENTRUST an exciting and supportive environment for professionals who thrive in remote work settings with clear, respectful expectations.
