Remote Human Systems Integration information

What is remote human systems integration?

Remote Human Systems Integration (HSI) is the process of designing and optimizing the interaction between humans and technology, specifically for systems that are managed or operated from a distance. This involves ensuring that remote operators can effectively control, monitor, and communicate with complex systems, such as unmanned vehicles, virtual environments, or telemedicine platforms. HSI professionals focus on ergonomics, user experience, human factors engineering, and safety to improve system performance and reduce errors. The goal is to create remote systems that are intuitive, efficient, and supportive of human capabilities and limitations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote human systems integration specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Human Systems Integration Specialist, you need a solid background in human factors engineering, systems analysis, and ergonomics, often supported by a relevant degree in engineering, psychology, or related fields. Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools, usability testing software, and systems engineering frameworks is typically required, along with certifications such as Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) being advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills help professionals effectively translate user needs into design solutions in remote, multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that integrated systems are user-friendly, safe, and effective, ultimately enhancing overall system performance and user satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote human systems integration, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Remote Human Systems Integration (HSI) is ensuring effective collaboration between multidisciplinary teams—often spread across different locations and time zones. Communication barriers can arise when integrating human factors with engineering, design, and operations remotely. To address these challenges, professionals often rely on structured virtual meetings, collaborative digital tools, and clear documentation processes. Proactively establishing communication protocols and leveraging project management platforms can help maintain alignment and ensure that human-centered design considerations remain integrated throughout the system development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Remote Human Systems Integration vs Remote Human Factors Specialist?

AspectRemote Human Systems IntegrationRemote Human Factors Specialist
CredentialsTypically requires systems engineering, human factors, or related certificationsUsually requires human factors, ergonomics, or psychology certifications

Job description

Position Type: Senior IC - Engineer | Contract
Location: Remote
Start Date: On or about September 1
Engagement Duration: ~4-5 months
Compensation: $90 - $120 / hr

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are building a custom revenue cycle management (RCM) platform for a small primary care network that connects two EMRs, manages claims and payments from ~30 payers, and reconciles against collections and contracted rates. We are seeking engineering talent to fully productionize a working prototype and integrate it into our client’s operational workflow. The engagement runs roughly September 2026 through January 2027, from build through go-live.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

·       Work directly with the client and fellow project team members to stand up and operate production-grade custom software, with the access controls, logging and deployment gates a PHI system requires.

·       Own the codebase, including: outbound claim path (837P generation, submission, and acknowledgement loop, 999 and 277CA), inbound payment path (835 remittance parsing, automated posting, and reconciliation of paid against contracted rates)

·       Build two-way A/R write-back capability from custom platform to integrated EHR systems

·       Write integration tests that simulate real EMR and payer behavior across versions and configurations, so a vendor-side change breaks a test instead of a month of cash.

·       Build for failure: set the reliability bar for a system that has idempotency, replay, reconciliation checks, and an audit ledger

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

·       Production code experience across the full claim-to-cash lifecycle: 837P out, 999 and 277CA acknowledgements, 835 remittances, payment posting.

·       Healthcare integrations (EMRs, clearinghouses, payers) you built and maintained. HL7 v2, vendor APIs or FHIR, SFTP.

·       Reliability engineering where a silent failure costs money: idempotency, replay, and reconciling systems that disagree with each other.

·       HIPAA in practice, and cloud operations under a BAA (AWS or comparable).

·       Backend depth in TypeScript/Node, Python, Java, or .NET.

·       Recent production code you personally wrote and shipped, not only systems you designed or reviewed.

HOW YOU WORK

·       Hands on and comfortable owning all aspects of engineering

·       Your last two years include code you shipped, not only documents you reviewed.

BONUS POINTS

·       Experience integrating with eClinicalWorks, MDLand, or Waystar.

·       Time inside a claims clearinghouse, RCM platform, or EMR billing group.

·       Payer enrollment and ERA/EFT setup you have personally driven, including the payers that never send a clean ERA.

·       Denial management and appeals automation.

·       Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or equivalent coding literacy.

COMPENSATION & DETAILS

·       ~$90 - $120 per hour equivalent, commensurate with experience. We will scope in a written statement of work and estimated hours.

·       Runs roughly September 2026 through January 2027, from start through go-live. Hours and total duration are scoped with you.

·       1099 independent contractor. This engagement will entail signing a contractor agreement and a subcontractor BAA.

·       Remote, US-based. Project may require occasional travel to Atlanta, GA
