Remote Hot Press Operators are skilled professionals who operate hot press machinery from a remote location, often using computer interfaces and monitoring systems. Their main responsibility is to control the process of pressing materials—such as metals, plastics, or composites—at high temperatures and pressures to create specific shapes or products. They ensure quality and safety standards are met, troubleshoot issues, and maintain accurate production records. Remote operation allows for increased efficiency and safety, especially in hazardous environments. These operators typically have technical training or experience in manufacturing or machinery operation.

Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help operators efficiently monitor equipment and respond to issues remotely. These skills ensure safe, efficient production and minimize downtime or defects in a manufacturing environment.

Job description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

Why this role matters:

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager, Web and Mobile to lead the development and delivery of AP's consumer-facing web and mobile applications. This is a hands-on, player-coach role that combines technical leadership, active coding, and delivery ownership in a fast-growing direct-to-consumer environment.

This role will oversee and manage one direct report, a Senior Engineer-level position.

You will lead a small, distributed team of engineers (internal and vendor-supported), drive implementation standards, and ensure predictable, high-quality delivery across web and mobile surfaces. You will partner closely with Product, Design, QA, and Platform Engineering to bring new consumer experiences to market. You have the opportunity to shape how millions of users experience AP journalism all across the world.

What you will do:

  • Lead delivery and release readiness for AP's consumer web and mobile applications.

  • Manage and mentor a small, distributed team of application engineers, including near-shore and offshore vendor partners.

  • Contribute hands-on code, perform code reviews, and help unblock complex implementation challenges.

  • Lead development of headless web applications using React / Next.js and native iOS and Android applications that serve millions of users daily.

  • Partner with Platform Engineering on GraphQL-based APIs that power shared functionality across web and mobile.

  • Drive technical direction for client-side architecture, performance, accessibility, and quality standards.

  • Partner with Product and Design to translate roadmap initiatives into executable engineering plans.

  • Coordinate web and app releases, manage client-side incidents and regressions, and ensure strong post-release follow-through.

  • Collaborate with QA to define and enforce quality gates, test automation expectations, and release criteria.

  • Use analytics and data to inform decisions around performance, engagement, and experimentation.

  • Ensure compliance with web security, privacy, and accessibility standards.

Who you are:

  • 6+ years of experience building modern consumer-facing web and mobile applications, with prior experience in a technical leadership or engineering management role.

  • Demonstrated success operating as a player-coach, balancing hands-on development with team leadership and delivery accountability.

  • Strong understanding of frontend and mobile application architecture, performance optimization, and release discipline.

  • Experience building and operating high-traffic, ad-supported consumer applications, with a strong focus on frontend performance, reliability, and user experience.

  • Experience managing distributed teams and external vendors across multiple time zones.

  • Experience working with CMS-driven applications; Brightspot experience is a plus.

  • Familiarity with GraphQL-based application architectures and client-side data consumption patterns.

  • Experience integrating multimedia content, video platforms, identity/registration flows, and engagement features.

  • Working knowledge of SEO considerations, web analytics tools, and experimentation approaches.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform root cause analysis and drive remediation.

  • Strong communicator with experience partnering closely with Product, Design, Editorial, Revenue, and QA stakeholders.

  • Experience working in agile development environments and leading cross-functional teams.

  • Master's or bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Work Location

New York (hybrid) or remote (US)

Salary & Benefits:

The anticipated salary range for this position is $135,000 - $170,000 - based on a candidate's skills, qualifications and location. The Associated Press offers comprehensive benefits, which include:

  • Competitive medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Retirement benefits
  • Company paid life insurance
  • Paid vacation and sick days
  • Paid parental leave for any new parent
  • Mental well-being resources
