What is a remote horse riding camp counselor?

A Remote Horse Riding Camp Counselor is a professional who leads and facilitates virtual horse riding camp activities for campers, typically children or teens, from a remote location. Their responsibilities may include teaching horsemanship skills, organizing online games and educational sessions, and providing mentorship and support to participants. These counselors use video calls, interactive lessons, and online resources to create an engaging camp experience even though the participants and counselors are not physically together. Strong communication skills, equestrian knowledge, and enthusiasm for working with youth are important for this role. The goal is to foster a fun, educational, and safe virtual environment for campers interested in horses and riding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote horse riding camp counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Horse Riding Camp Counselor, you generally need solid knowledge of horse care, riding instruction, and youth mentoring, often supported by equine certifications or camp counseling experience. Familiarity with virtual communication tools (such as Zoom or Google Meet), online safety protocols, and basic video content creation is typically required. Outstanding soft skills include patience, creativity, and strong communication to engage and teach campers remotely. These skills are crucial for ensuring a safe, interactive, and enjoyable virtual camp experience that fosters learning and connection.

How do remote horse riding camp counselors effectively engage and instruct campers without being physically present?

Remote Horse Riding Camp Counselors use a combination of live virtual sessions, pre-recorded videos, and interactive activities to engage campers. They often collaborate closely with on-site staff and parents to ensure safety and smooth communication. A key challenge is maintaining campers’ attention and ensuring they understand instructions, so counselors frequently use creative digital resources, demonstrations, and real-time feedback. Building rapport remotely requires patience, adaptability, and strong communication skills, but it can be highly rewarding as counselors see campers develop confidence and skills from afar.

  • Oversee the planning and organization of monthly virtual staff support circles and blog posts.
  • Develop and document clinical activities, with input from Clinical Directors and Clinical Managers.
  • Oversee camper outreach and recruitment to achieve goals for enrollment, retention, and diversity.
  • In collaboration with the SNCM(s), cultivate partnerships with organizations and agencies for camper referrals and school-year support.
  • Oversee the camper intake process. Provide guidance on applicants who should not be invited back or who need additional follow up.

CLINICAL TRAINING & SUPERVISION
  • Provide year-round clinical training and supervision for all clinical team members.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire clinical staff for all programs.
  • Develop training plans and onboarding of seasonal clinical staff.
  • Attend, represent, and speak at conferences, retreats, and events.

EXPECTATIONS & COMPENSATION
  • 40-50 hours/week (standard schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 9-5/10-6 ET, depending on location) with flexible hours to account for calls and meetings in the evenings
  • Primarily remote position with travel for in-person requirements. On-site availability during 3-4 weeks of summer camp programs, plus quarterly travel during the year for programs, events, and meetings
  • Annual base salary range: $90,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience
  • In addition to the annual base salary, Experience Camps offers a benefits package for full-time employees including employer-subsidized health, wellness, and technology benefits; a healthcare concierge service; flexible work scheduling; telecommuting; paid holidays; and PTO, bereavement, and parental leave offerings.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • LPC, LCSW, LCPC, or similar licensure is required.
  • Must have a Masters or Doctoral degree in social work, counseling, clinical psychology, or family therapy.
