To thrive as a Remote HITRUST Compliance Specialist, you need a deep understanding of information security, risk management, and regulatory compliance, often supported by relevant degrees and HITRUST or cybersecurity certifications. Familiarity with frameworks like HITRUST CSF, GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) tools, and audit management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting requirements and guiding organizations through compliance processes. These skills ensure accurate risk assessments, effective compliance strategies, and successful HITRUST certification in a remote work environment.

What is the difference between Remote Hitrust vs Remote HIPAA Compliance Specialist?

Remote Hitrust professionals focus on implementing and managing HITRUST CSF frameworks, often requiring cybersecurity and compliance certifications. Remote HIPAA Compliance Specialists primarily ensure healthcare organizations meet HIPAA standards, with certifications centered on HIPAA regulations. Both roles are remote and serve the healthcare industry, but Hitrust roles tend to involve broader cybersecurity frameworks, while HIPAA specialists focus specifically on privacy and security rules.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a remote HITRUST compliance role?

Professionals in remote HITRUST compliance roles often encounter challenges such as effectively coordinating with cross-functional teams spread across different locations and time zones. They must ensure clear communication and collaboration to gather required documentation and evidence for HITRUST assessments. Additionally, staying up to date with changing HITRUST standards and maintaining secure data practices while working remotely can be demanding. However, strong organizational skills and proactive use of collaboration tools can help overcome these challenges.

About Youtopia
At Youtopia, we're transforming health through precision nourishment automation. Our AI-driven platform analyzes individual nutrient needs through diagnostic testing and seamlessly matches those needs with toxin-free, locally prepared meals to optimize health and longevity. We're not just building software-we're building a system that empowers millions to live healthier, longer lives.
As we gear up for our launch, we're assembling a world-class engineering team that blends technical excellence with a mission-centered approach. If you thrive at the intersection of impact, compliance, and innovation, this role is your opportunity to lead the secure, scalable systems powering our health platform-today and far into the future.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Healthcare Platform Engineer & Compliance Expert to architect, implement, and govern the HIPAA- and HITRUST-compliant systems at the core of our platform. You'll design enterprise-grade, cloud-native infrastructure, integrate with clinical systems, and ensure we're audit-ready from day one.
Beyond certification, this role is the long-term steward of Youtopia's health technology ecosystem-owning lab integrations, wearables, biosensor data, health-centric data lakes, and emerging nutrition science capabilities for years to come.
This is a hybrid/remote role (Mountain or Central Time preferred) with opportunities to mentor engineers and define system standards across the organization.
What You'll Own
HIPAA & HITRUST Compliance Leadership
  • Own the design and implementation of HIPAA- and HITRUST-compliant systems.
  • Translate regulatory requirements into actionable engineering decisions.
  • Ensure continuous compliance, audit readiness, and rigorous documentation across the platform.
  • Lead risk assessments, security reviews, and compliance controls in collaboration with leadership.

Technical Architecture & Execution
  • Architect secure, cloud-native systems in Azure + .NET 10, leveraging App Services, Functions, API Management, Event Grid/Hub, Cosmos/SQL, and Key Vault.
  • Design APIs and data pipelines for clinical and wellness data.
  • Drive all EHR integrations (FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR) and lab diagnostics connections.
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices for performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.

Long-Term Platform Ownership & Health Innovation
This role permanently owns the health technology domain of Youtopia's platform. After initial compliance and system hardening, your long-term responsibilities include:
Health Data Ecosystem Stewardship
  • Define the long-term architecture for health and biomarker data pipelines, ensuring accuracy, fidelity, and secure storage.
  • Own the clinical and nutritional data models, evolving them as science and product needs advance.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of a health-focused data lake that powers research, personalization, and predictive analytics.

Wearable, Biosensor, and Lab Integrations
  • Build and maintain scalable integrations with labs, diagnostics partners, CGMs, wearables (Apple Health, Oura, Garmin, WHOOP), and emerging biosensor technologies.
  • Architect systems to ingest, normalize, and validate real-time physiological and nutritional data at scale.
  • Ensure bi-directional data flows are compliant, stable, and extendable.

Nutritional Science & Decision Intelligence
  • Collaborate with clinical and nutrition science teams to encode emerging research into platform logic.
  • Lead engineering around nutrient scoring, metabolic modeling, and personalized health recommendations.
  • Develop infrastructure for machine learning that uses lab data, dietary patterns, and outcomes to refine recommendations over time.
  • Explore new ways to merge AI, biological data, and personalized nutrition to create industry-leading wellness outcomes.

Futureproofing the Platform
  • Continuously evaluate industry trends in digital health, interoperability, and data privacy.
  • Drive innovative initiatives that enhance the intelligence, automation, and clinical robustness of Youtopia's platform.
  • Ensure that all future product expansions-from blood panels to microbiome tests to genetic data-fit into a unified, secure architecture.

Mentorship & Team Leadership
  • Mentor engineers on compliance, cloud architecture, and secure system design.
  • Lead or influence high-impact decisions across engineering, clinical, and product teams.
  • Set coding standards, reliability metrics, and documentation practices that scale with the company.

Collaboration & Product Impact
  • Partner with product and design to ensure smooth, secure user experiences without compromising speed or innovation.
  • Play a key role during high-stakes sprints involving clinical workflows, diagnostics, or patient data.
  • Communicate system-level constraints and possibilities to cross-functional teams in a clear, structured manner.

What You Bring
Experience & Expertise
  • 7+ years in software engineering; minimum 2 years leading HIPAA/HITRUST initiatives.
  • Deep expertise with Azure cloud services and .NET 10 / C#.
  • Experience integrating with EHR platforms using FHIR/HL7.
  • Strong familiarity with HITRUST, HIPAA, SOC 2, and related frameworks.
  • Proven experience designing secure, scalable, audit-ready systems.
  • Background in systems handling sensitive health, clinical, or biosensor data.

Skills & Attributes
  • Strong leadership, architectural thinking, and cross-functional communication.
  • Ability to break down complex health workflows into scalable, secure solutions.
  • Mission-driven mindset and passion for transforming health through technology.
  • Comfortable working in a high-velocity startup environment.

Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with LIMS or other clinical lab systems.
