Remote Ground Control information

What is a remote ground control operator?

A Remote Ground Control operator is responsible for monitoring and managing unmanned vehicles or systems, such as drones or remote sensors, from a distance using specialized software and equipment. These professionals ensure safe operation, gather data, and may respond to emergencies or unexpected situations. They typically work in industries like aviation, agriculture, defense, or surveying, and require strong technical and communication skills. Their tasks often include mission planning, system troubleshooting, and real-time data analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote ground control operator?

To thrive as a Remote Ground Control Operator, you need strong technical knowledge of unmanned systems, situational awareness, and often a background in engineering or aviation. Familiarity with ground control software, remote piloting systems, and relevant certifications such as Part 107 (for drones) are typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail help operators respond effectively to dynamic situations. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and precise control of remote operations, which is critical for mission success and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by remote ground control operators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Ground Control operators often face challenges such as maintaining effective communication with on-site teams, managing multiple systems or drones simultaneously, and troubleshooting technical issues from a distance. To overcome these challenges, operators should develop strong problem-solving skills, stay up-to-date with the latest remote monitoring technologies, and establish clear protocols for escalation and support. Regular training and collaboration with both technical and field teams can also help ensure smooth operations and quick resolution of issues.

What is the difference between Remote Ground Control vs Drone Pilot?

AspectRemote Ground ControlDrone Pilot
CertificationsFAA Part 107, Remote Pilot CertificateFAA Part 107, Remote Pilot Certificate
Work EnvironmentGround-based, remote operationsIn-flight, remote or on-site
Industry UsageSurveying, mapping, inspectionsFilmmaking, photography, inspections

Remote Ground Control and Drone Pilot roles both require FAA Part 107 certification and involve remote operation of drones. However, Remote Ground Control typically focuses on managing drone missions from a ground station, often in a remote setting, while Drone Pilots operate the drone directly, either in-flight or on-site. Both roles are essential in industries like surveying, inspection, and media production, but they differ mainly in operational scope and on-site presence.

At Stellar Solutions, we offer talented, energetic, and immediately productive resources to satisfy our customersโ€™ critical needs in systems engineering and integration, mission operations, program management and strategic planning. We are a leading service and expertise provider for high-tech commercial ventures, spanning communications, earth observation and remote sensing systems and data products, to the infrastructures that support earth orbiting and beyond earth orbit businesses.

Stellar Solutions is seeking a Systems Integration Engineer / Ground Architecture SEIT to support the Advanced Fire Control Ground Infrastructure (AFCGI) program.

In this role, you will support the development, integration, and deployment of a ground architecture enabling advanced fire control capabilities for missile tracking and targeting, including hypersonic threats. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will help define system architecture, manage technical requirements, support system integration and test activities, and collaborate with government customers and industry partners to deliver operational capabilities.

You will:

  • Support the development and evolution of the overall ground system architecture and associated subsystem designs
  • Develop, manage, and maintain system requirements, interface definitions, technical budgets, and Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices (RVTMs)
  • Support technical baseline development, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and major lifecycle reviews
  • Collaborate with customers, users, and engineering teams to define system functionality, operational concepts, and technical solutions
  • Distill complex technical information into clear engineering recommendations and presentations for customers and program leadership
  • Support system integration, verification, anomaly resolution, and technical risk management throughout the systems engineering lifecycle
  • Develop architecture products, engineering analyses, technical documentation, and presentation materials supporting program execution
  • Work within an agile development environment to rapidly deliver capabilities while maintaining sound systems engineering practices

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of systems engineering experience supporting space, ground, or defense systems
  • Experience with system architecture, requirements development, interface management, and technical documentation
  • Experience supporting space or ground systems through technical design, system integration, Integration & Test (I&T), verification, and transition to operations
  • Familiarity with Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices (RVTMs), and systems engineering best practices
  • Experience supporting technical reviews, risk management, and requirements verification
  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community space and ground system programs
  • Experience with ground segment architectures, mission operations, or secure networked systems
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and Integrated Master Schedules (IMS)
  • Experience working in classified development environments
  • Previous technical leadership or mentoring experience

Clearance:

  • Active TOP SECRET clearance with eligibility for sensitive compartmentalized information (SCI) and special access program (SAP) clearances (SCI preferred).

Compensation:

The typical pay range for this position is USD $135,000 - $195,000 per year.  Individual pay is determined by many factors including work location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for a comprehensive total rewards package that includes an annual performance bonus, an employer-funded Profit-Sharing Plan (PSP) contribution based on base compensation, and comprehensive employer-paid medical benefits, PTO pay-out options, along with additional company-sponsored benefits. All of these benefits represent an additional 30-40% to your base compensation for a total compensation package.

This role offers the opportunity to support the development, integration, and deployment of advanced space and ground capabilities for high-priority national security missions. Your technical contributions will directly support mission readiness and the successful delivery of operational capabilities.
