What is a remote Governance Risk Compliance (GRC) professional?

A Remote Governance Risk Compliance (GRC) professional is responsible for ensuring that an organization adheres to legal, regulatory, and internal policies related to risk management and corporate governance, all while working from a remote location. They assess risks, implement compliance programs, and develop policies that help prevent violations and mitigate risks. These professionals use digital tools to monitor compliance, conduct audits, and report findings to management or regulatory bodies, ensuring that the organization operates ethically and within the law, regardless of where they are physically located.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Governance Risk Compliance (GRC) professional?

To succeed as a Remote Governance Risk Compliance professional, you need a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, risk management principles, and compliance standards, often backed by a relevant degree and certifications such as CISA, CISSP, or CRISC. Familiarity with GRC platforms (like RSA Archer or LogicGate), data analytics tools, and documentation systems is crucial for effective monitoring and reporting. Outstanding analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication set top candidates apart in remote environments. These competencies ensure regulatory adherence, minimize organizational risks, and maintain a robust compliance posture even from a distance.

Staying updated on regulatory changes and ensuring timely compliance across distributed teams can also be complex. To manage these challenges, it's important to leverage collaboration tools, establish regular check-ins, and use centralized documentation systems. Building strong virtual relationships and setting clear expectations with stakeholders can further support effective risk management and compliance.

Job description

Description

Your role at GEI.

GEI is seeking an experienced structural engineer to join our dams and water resources consulting practice.  Dams, reservoirs, hydroelectric developments, and other water resources facilities are crucial components of our nation’s infrastructure, providing clean energy, water supply, and flood control.  GEI serves public and private clients operating some of the largest and most interesting water resources projects in the world.  Our roles include designing new facilities, upgrading existing developments, evaluating safety, and assessing risks.  As part of GEI’s dams and water resources practice, you will work with the leading experts in dams and dam safety at one of the premier firms in the industry.

This position can be filled in our Woburn or Franklin (MA), Bedford (NH), Portland (ME), or Ithaca (NY) offices, with an expectation of about three days a week in-office (i.e., about two days remote).  Dams in our clients’ portfolios are in some of the most spectacularly scenic parts of the country, including the Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and New Hampshire, the lakes of central Maine, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.  Work will occasionally require the ability and willingness to hike moderate distances (5+ miles), traverse steep terrain, climb ladders, enter narrow galleries, and access remote sites by off-road vehicle and helicopter.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Serve as structural lead, and/or project/task manager.
  • Oversee and review designs developed by staff engineers. Mentor and promote technical development of staff engineers.
  • Analyze new and existing concrete gravity dams, arch dams, buttress dams, spillways, powerhouses, intake towers, penstocks, dam gates, and similar structures for stresses, stability, and performance under extreme loads.
  • Analyze and design other facilities as needed, including foundations, retaining walls, temporary works, and special structures.
  • Develop and evaluate alternatives for new facilities and upgrades to existing projects.
  • Complete detailed design calculations and prepare contract documents and technical specifications.
  • Inspect ongoing dam and water resources construction projects for conformance with design requirements.
  • Inspect existing projects as part of regulatory compliance programs (e.g., FERC Part 12D).
  • Participate in semi-quantitative risk analysis workshops.
  • Prepare formal written reports, give presentations, and participate in internal and client meetings.
  • Prepare scopes of work, budgets, and schedules.
 Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 7 to 15+ years’ experience in structural engineering related to dams and water resources structures.
  • Professional Engineer licensure or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire.
  • Experience with structural analysis software (SAP2000/STAAD/RISA/ANSYS, etc.) and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel on temporary assignments.
  • Willingness and ability to work in the field and in inclement weather.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience managing multi-discipline design projects.
  • Experience in analysis and design of hydraulic structures.
  • M.S. in Structural Engineering.
  • Experience with Revit modeling or BIM.
  • Structural Engineer licensure.
