Description
The Department of Conservation under the California Geological Survey (CGS) Regional Geologic and Landslide Mapping Program is seeking to hire a student assistant to support the Landslide Mapping Unit. Project work will be commensurate with each student's skill and experience, but will generally involve the collection, management, analysis, and interpretation of geologic and landslide data. Project work may include working with CGS landslide databases and event inventories; assist with seasonal and storm-scale data acquisition; and compile mapping from previously-published geologic maps. Many of these projects involve the use of GIS software (i.e., QGIS, ArcGIS Pro) and students may have the opportunity to digitize geologic mapping and assist with project layout development.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Work Schedule

Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$18.27 - $24.04 per hour
Minimum Qualifications
  • Familiarity and experience with geologic, topographic, and other types of maps.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Basic understanding of geologic concepts, including stratigraphy, depositional environments, geomorphology, and structure.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with landslide geomorphology and landslide mapping; familiarity with acquiring climatic data, such as from NOAA and Synoptic databases
  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Please note that prior to appointment, individuals claiming preference under one of these categories will be required to furnish documentation establishing their eligibility.

  • Work with CGS engineering geologists to populate the Regional Landslide Database and other landslide inventories with reported landslide events, antecedent climate data, and published seasonal and storm-scale precipitation metrics.
  • Be responsible for compiling landslide mapping from previously-published geologic maps for inclusion in landslide inventories.
  • Students with ArcGIS experience may be asked to digitize geologic features, geolocate landslide event reports and geologic data.
  • Assist with project layout and style file development.
  • Students with a background in mathematics and/or computer programming experience (Fortran, Python, R) may have the opportunity to work on slope stability modeling, work on climatic modeling, and contribute to machine learning projects.
  • Field work opportunities may also be available for interested students.
