Job description

The GIS Technician supports the spatial data, mapping, and geographic information system (GIS) services that underpin mine planning, operations, geology, environmental, and regulatory programs at the Stibnite Gold Project. This is an entry-level, developmental position intended for recent graduates with foundational GIS coursework. Working under the direction of the Principal Mine Surveyor and senior survey/GIS staff, the GIS Technician acquires, organizes, and maintains spatial data; produces maps and figures; performs routine quality checks on geospatial datasets; and supports field GPS and drone data workflows. The role is structured to build technical depth in mine-context GIS over time, with progression toward the GIS Specialist role and adjacent technical positions on the survey and geology teams.
Requirements
EH&S
• Demonstrate and maintain Perpetua's commitment to safety and environmental protection as core values.
• Comply with site safety standards, MSHA requirements, and Perpetua policies whenever working in field environments.
• Support sustainable mining practices through accurate spatial data that informs reclamation planning, environmental monitoring, and permit compliance.
GIS Data Management
• Build and maintain spatial datasets (vector, raster, LiDAR, point cloud) under established metadata, projection, and naming conventions, consistent with mine survey data standards (SRV-008/SRV-012).
• Digitize, georeference, and attribute features from field data, drone imagery, scanned drawings, and contractor deliverables.
• Maintain version control, audit trails, and organized project archives within the enterprise GIS environment.
• Support land tenure, claim, and easement record-keeping in coordination with the Principal Mine Surveyor.
Mapping and Visualization
• Produce maps, figures, and visualizations to support mine engineering, geology, environmental, permitting, community engagement, and external reporting needs.
• Apply consistent cartographic standards (symbology, scale, legend, projection) across products.
• Iterate map products in response to reviewer feedback from technical leads and external consultants.
QA/QC and Data Integrity
• Perform routine quality checks (topology, attribute completeness, projection consistency, metadata) on spatial datasets.
• Flag and document data anomalies for resolution by the GIS Specialist or Principal Mine Surveyor.
• Maintain organized file structures, project archives, and metadata records to support audit and regulatory review.
Field and Survey Support
• Support field GPS data collection, including equipment setup, basic troubleshooting, and post-processing under direction from senior survey staff.
• Assist with as-built data collection, drone/UAV imagery processing, and integration of field data into the GIS environment.
• Coordinate with Survey Technicians and Senior Mine Surveyors on shared data and field schedules.
Learning and Development
• Build technical proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and supporting tools used in mine survey and engineering workflows.
• Develop scripting and automation skills (Python, ArcPy, ModelBuilder) to improve workflow efficiency.
• Participate in cross-training across mine engineering, surveying, geology, and environmental workflows to broaden technical understanding and identify a long-term technical track.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Geology, Natural Resources, or a related physical/earth science discipline.
• A degree specifically in GIS or Geography is not required. Candidates from adjacent disciplines (e.g., Environmental Science, Geology, Forestry, Civil/Mining Engineering) with documented GIS coursework, certificates, or capstone work are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Recent graduates encouraged to apply.
Experience
• 0-2 years of professional GIS experience, 3 + years preferred.
• Internship, capstone, undergraduate research, or volunteer experience producing GIS deliverables is valued in lieu of professional experience.
• Exposure to mining, environmental, or land-use applications is an asset, not a requirement.
Skills
• Working proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, including geoprocessing tools, symbology, and basic spatial analysis.
• Familiarity with coordinate systems, projections, datums, and cartographic conventions.
• Microsoft Excel competency (filtering, sorting, basic formulas, simple pivots).
• Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to data QA.
• Effective written and verbal communication; ability to take direction, ask clarifying questions, and follow established procedures.
• Eagerness to develop skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Python/ArcPy scripting, drone data processing, and 3D mine modeling tools (e.g., Vulcan, Deswik, MineSight) over time.
• Reliable computer skills in a Windows environment and the Microsoft 365 suite.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work at a desk and operate a computer for extended periods.
• Adequate vision, hearing, and communication skills to perform job duties safely and effectively.
• Willingness to work in both office and field environments, including occasional exposure to variable weather, rugged terrain, and active mining/heavy equipment areas.
• Flexibility to work on-site at the Stibnite Gold Project as required.
