How much do geophysics internships jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for geophysics internships in the United States is $95,411.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $70,000.00 and $112,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Geophysics Internships, and why are they important?

To excel in Geophysics Internships, you typically need a strong background in earth sciences, physics, mathematics, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with geophysical data analysis tools, GIS software, and seismic interpretation systems is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork skills help interns stand out in collaborative research and fieldwork environments. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to technical challenges, and support the advancement of geophysical investigations.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a geophysics internship?

As a geophysics intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects, such as collecting and analyzing geophysical data, assisting with field surveys using seismic, magnetic, or gravity methods, and helping interpret subsurface structures. Interns often work closely with experienced geophysicists and multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to both fieldwork and data processing in lab or office settings. This hands-on experience helps you develop technical skills and a deeper understanding of how geophysics contributes to fields like energy exploration, environmental studies, and engineering projects.

What are geophysics internships?

Geophysics internships are short-term, practical work experiences for students or recent graduates interested in the field of geophysics. These internships typically involve assisting with research, data collection, analysis, and sometimes fieldwork related to the study of the Earth's physical properties. Interns may work with geophysical equipment, software, and data interpretation under the supervision of experienced geophysicists. The goal is to provide hands-on experience, industry exposure, and professional networking opportunities that can help launch a career in geophysics.

What is the difference between Geophysics Internships vs Geology Internships?

AspectGeophysics InternshipsGeology Internships
Required CredentialsTypically requires a background in geophysics, physics, or earth sciencesUsually requires geology, earth science, or environmental science background
