Position Overview:

Reporting directly to the Senior Geoscientist in our Courtenay Office, the successful GIS Technician will support projects across the resource, municipal, energy, and mining sectors. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in maintaining geospatial databases, performing spatial analysis, and providing technical support to engineers and project managers. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams throughout British Columbia.

Major Job Functions:

• Prepare, maintain, and update GIS databases, geodatabases, and spatial datasets for engineering and environmental projects.
• Produce high-quality maps, figures, and web-based mapping products to support reports, proposals, regulatory submissions, and other client deliverables.
• Collect, compile, and validate spatial data from survey, GPS, LiDAR, remote sensing, CAD, field investigations, and external data sources.
• Perform spatial analysis and geoprocessing to support infrastructure planning, transportation studies, environmental assessments, terrain mapping, and land development projects.
• Integrate GIS data with engineering design and drafting platforms, including AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software.
• Support quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and consistency of spatial information.
• Assist project teams with field data collection, mobile GIS workflows, and GPS data management.
• Develop and maintain GIS standards, workflows, and documentation.
• Prepare technical summaries and visual presentations for clients, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and public consultation processes.
• Collaborate with engineers, planners, environmental scientists, and other technical specialists on multidisciplinary projects.

Specific Skills and Knowledge:

• Experience with QGIS and the OSGeo4W software stack is considered an asset.
• Experience developing and maintaining GIS production standards and workflows to support consistent map deliverables.
• Strong understanding of GIS data governance, organization, and quality management practices.
• Experience setting up and managing small-scale spatial databases and integrating GIS applications with GPS/GNSS technology.
• Experience working with and managing LiDAR datasets.
• Exposure to workflow automation through Python or other scripting tools is considered an asset.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent organizational, planning, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.

Education and Experience:

• Diploma or Degree in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum two (2) years of GIS experience in engineering consulting, municipal government, natural resources, environmental consulting, or a related industry. This requirement may be waived for candidates with an Advanced Diploma in GIS or equivalent experience.
• Proficient with desktop GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS Pro.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and willingness to travel to project sites throughout British Columbia as required.

Salary:

$60,000-$90,000 annually plus benefits. Actual compensation within this range will be based on experience, education, technical skills, certifications, and overall qualifications.
