Job description

We are seeking an Associate Principal passionate about geotechnical and geostructural engineering, client service, and people leadership. This senior-level role supports the continued development of geotechnical and geostructural services across investigation, repair, rehabilitation, and new construction projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary technical and project leader for complex geotechnical and geostructural assignments.
  • Provide high-level oversight and direction for large projects or multiple concurrent projects, including scope, schedule, budget, contracting, and fee collection.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering and technical staff, fostering growth and performance improvement.
  • Serve as principal client contact, building long-term relationships and ensuring exceptional client service.
  • Ensure adherence to SGH's QA/QC standards and safeguard the firm's technical and professional reputation.
  • Coordinate across multidisciplinary SGH teams to deliver integrated solutions for technically challenging projects.
  • Independently generate and sustain external work through business development, marketing, and client engagement.
  • Contribute to professional visibility through publications, presentations, teaching, committees, or society involvement.
  • Maintain strategic awareness of emerging technologies, research, and industry developments relevant to geotechnical and geostructural engineering.
  • Model SGH values of leadership, ethics, collaboration, and accountability.

What You'll Need:

  • 15+ years of geotechnical/geostructural engineering experience at a senior/leadership level.
  • MS or PhD in Geotechnical or Geostructural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering license (PE) required.
  • Proven ability to independently generate and sustain significant client work.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring experience with demonstrated success in staff development.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage yourself and manage monthly volume of $100k or annual volume of $500k, including multiple staff.
  • Prominent involvement within academia or an industry organization such as AASHTO, ASCE GeoInstitute, Deep Foundations Institute, or other active geotechnical organization, including working on committees, making presentations, authoring articles, or other active participation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; comfortable presenting complex technical subjects to clients and peers.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and sound judgment in managing projects and client relationships.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical analysis software (GEOSLOPE Suite, Slide, Plaxis, LPILEplus, DeepEX, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, integrity, and collaborative approach.
  • Willingness to travel to out-of-state or remote project sites as required.
