What is a Remote Geospatial Developer job?

A Remote Geospatial Developer is a software developer who specializes in building applications that process, analyze, and visualize geospatial data. They work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing data, and mapping technologies to create solutions across industries such as environmental science, urban planning, and logistics. This role typically involves programming in languages like Python, JavaScript, or SQL, and using tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, and Google Earth Engine. Since the job is remote, developers collaborate with teams and clients virtually using communication and project management tools.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Geospatial Developers, and how are they typically addressed?

Remote Geospatial Developers often encounter challenges such as managing large spatial datasets, integrating data from multiple sources, and ensuring accuracy in map visualizations. Collaboration across time zones and communicating complex spatial concepts to non-technical stakeholders can also be demanding. To address these issues, teams typically use version control systems, detailed documentation, and regular virtual meetings to stay aligned. Ongoing professional development and staying current with the latest GIS tools further help remote developers tackle technical hurdles efficiently. Effective teamwork and strong project management practices are key to successfully navigating these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Geospatial Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Geospatial Developer, you need a solid background in GIS principles, spatial data analysis, and programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, typically supported by a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS, and cloud-based mapping platforms, as well as relevant certifications such as Esri Technical Certifications, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are critical soft skills in this position. These capabilities ensure accurate project delivery, seamless teamwork across distributed teams, and the ability to quickly adapt to evolving geospatial technologies.

Job description

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Full-Stack Geospatial Data Engineer in Netherlands.

This is an exceptional opportunity to build cutting-edge geospatial and climate intelligence solutions that transform complex Earth observation data into actionable insights. In this role, you will work across the full technology stack, developing everything from large-scale satellite data pipelines to customer-facing applications used by organizations focused on sustainability, environmental monitoring, and climate finance. You will help shape the architecture of a rapidly evolving platform, working alongside experts in geospatial science, data engineering, and environmental research. The position offers significant ownership, technical freedom, and the chance to influence both product direction and engineering standards. Ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, this role combines innovation, impact, and mission-driven work in a fully remote environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Design and build end-to-end geospatial data systems, including satellite imagery ingestion, processing pipelines, storage architecture, and API services.
  • Develop and maintain scalable backend services and geospatial APIs that deliver environmental intelligence to customers and stakeholders.
  • Create intuitive frontend applications and dashboards using modern web technologies to support data visualization and decision-making.
  • Optimize large-scale data workflows handling massive volumes of Earth observation data while ensuring performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Implement infrastructure automation, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring solutions, and cloud-native operational practices.
  • Collaborate with researchers, scientists, and technical stakeholders to translate complex geospatial requirements into production-ready systems.
  • Lead engineering best practices through code reviews, architectural guidance, and technical mentorship.
  • Contribute to hiring efforts and help establish the long-term technical vision for the platform.
Requirements:
  • Strong full-stack engineering experience with Python, TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and modern API development frameworks.
  • Expertise in building and maintaining large-scale data pipelines and distributed data processing systems.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud storage architectures, object stores, data orchestration platforms, and modern data formats.
  • Deep knowledge of geospatial technologies, remote sensing workflows, GIS tools, and satellite imagery processing.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, Infrastructure as Code, observability tools, and DevOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts, data versioning, scalability, and system reliability.
  • Ability to work independently in fast-moving environments with evolving requirements and minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for climate technology, environmental sustainability, and mission-driven innovation.
  • Experience leading engineering initiatives, machine learning systems, GPU-accelerated processing, or environmental science projects is considered a strong advantage.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary ranging from $40,000 to $110,000 annually for U.S.-based candidates, depending on experience and location.
  • Flexible remote-first work environment with asynchronous collaboration practices.
  • Hardware, conference, and professional learning stipend.
  • Opportunity to work alongside leading academics, researchers, and industry experts.
  • Significant ownership over product architecture and technical decision-making.
  • Career growth opportunities including technical leadership and mentoring responsibilities.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge geospatial, climate intelligence, and environmental data technologies.
  • Meaningful work contributing to climate action, sustainability initiatives, and environmental impact at global scale.
