What is a Remote Geospatial Developer job?

A Remote Geospatial Developer is a software developer who specializes in building applications that process, analyze, and visualize geospatial data. They work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing data, and mapping technologies to create solutions across industries such as environmental science, urban planning, and logistics. This role typically involves programming in languages like Python, JavaScript, or SQL, and using tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, and Google Earth Engine. Since the job is remote, developers collaborate with teams and clients virtually using communication and project management tools.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Geospatial Developers, and how are they typically addressed?

Remote Geospatial Developers often encounter challenges such as managing large spatial datasets, integrating data from multiple sources, and ensuring accuracy in map visualizations. Collaboration across time zones and communicating complex spatial concepts to non-technical stakeholders can also be demanding. To address these issues, teams typically use version control systems, detailed documentation, and regular virtual meetings to stay aligned. Ongoing professional development and staying current with the latest GIS tools further help remote developers tackle technical hurdles efficiently. Effective teamwork and strong project management practices are key to successfully navigating these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Geospatial Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Geospatial Developer, you need a solid background in GIS principles, spatial data analysis, and programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, typically supported by a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS, and cloud-based mapping platforms, as well as relevant certifications such as Esri Technical Certifications, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are critical soft skills in this position. These capabilities ensure accurate project delivery, seamless teamwork across distributed teams, and the ability to quickly adapt to evolving geospatial technologies.

Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
1. Explain what the scope of the work/project is? Project Overview, deliverables (what is this person responsible for).
This role will support small gas regulation station and regulator station projects (not large assets such as compressor stations). Responsibilities include conducting site visits, producing designs from IFR through As-Built, and generating full drawing packages for each phase. The contractor will create 3D models using CADWorx and translate them into fabrication and as-built drawings, while coordinating closely with engineers and project managers to ensure correct classifications and bills of materials
2. What does a typical day look like?
The designer will own projects end-to-end. Work includes drafting and design, collaboration with engineers and operators, revising drawings, managing documentation, and occasionally traveling to project sites. After onboarding, the individual is expected to work independently on assigned projects, seeking clarification as needed but without micromanagement.
6. Describe work environment / team culture (supportive/collaborative, teamwork or individual contributor)?
The environment is highly collaborative and relationship-driven. Designers work directly with engineers and operators, are expected to ask questions, and actively collaborate rather than simply following redlines. The team values independence, trust, and open communication.
7. Can you elaborate on any potential risks or safety considerations associated with this role, particularly if the responsibilities extend beyond a standard desk or office environment?
This role includes site visits to gas facilities, requiring safety awareness. PPE is required (boots may be supplier-provided depending on contract terms). Travel to sites such as Grand Junction or Alamosa may occur, typically as full-day trips
9. What are the work hours/shift (standard, evening, full time/part time, OT required, on-call for 24/7 operation)?
40 hours per week
Primarily onsite Tuesday-Thursday at the LDC
Standard business hours
1. What are the top 3-5 skills and qualifications (technology/application/software, etc.) required?
Drafting and design experience
CADWorx (preferred) or comparable drafting tools
Ability to interpret drawings into real-world field applications
Understanding of pipe specs and bills of materials
Document control and revision management
2. What non-technical skills are necessary (i.e., such as communication, problem solving, team player)?
Strong collaboration skills
Ability to work independently without micromanagement
Receptiveness to feedback
Clear communication with engineers and operations teams
3. Ideal candidate background and how many years required?
3-5 years of drafting experience
Utility experience strongly preferred
Geospatial, construction design, P&ID, architectural, or engineering drafting experience may translate well
Candidates with less experience may still be considered if skill alignment is strong.
4. Are there any specific companies you like to see on a candidate's resume?
Utility or utility-adjacent experience is highly desirable; no specific companies named.
5. Are there any certifications that the candidate must possess?
No required certifications.
6. Are there any preferred or "nice to have" skills?
Previous Energy utility experience
SAP (nice to have, but less important)
Geospatial mapping experience
Utility industry familiarity
1. What is the location of the contract assignment (Full time onsite, hybrid - percent of time on site/home or, are you open to fully remote)? If the resource is expected to be onsite, can you confirm if the resource can park on property/in the ramp?
LDC (primary)
Onsite Tuesday-Thursday
Field/site visits as needed
Creates, updates and revises sketches, working drawings and contract documents using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software or manual means of drafting to meet customer requirements. Prepares 2D and 3D models. Must be able to read and comprehend detailed customer requirements, data sheets and supplier specifications. Assignments will be completed utilizing information provided by project engineering, architectural, or technical services staff under the direction of a supervisor. Requires familiarity with drafting techniques and engineering concepts and terminology. Able to read engineering drawing and blueprints. Prepares documentation to support design drawings. Prepare bills of material, schedules, and assist engineering personnel with formal drawing transmittals and construction issues.
