Job description

Contemporaries Inc. is a government contracting firm supporting the National Institutes of Health in their efforts to hire a Data Scientist to support environmental health and extreme weather research initiatives. This is a long-term contract opportunity offering remote work flexibility. We are looking for candidates with strong experience in the R programming language, geospatial/environmental data analysis, and data visualization who are excited about supporting impactful public health and scientific research efforts.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Support the continued development and optimization of the Amadeus software package within the open-source R programming environment
  • Improve computational performance, reduce package dependencies, and enhance runtime efficiency of the Amadeus code base
  • Develop new geospatial environmental datasets proposed by the health and extreme weather (HEW) research community and leadership team
  • Work within established coding and development style guidelines for the Amadeus R-package
  • Create and revise tutorials related to:
    • data downloads,
    • covariate calculations,
    • statistical model development,
    • and data visualization
  • Utilize the Amadeus R-package to support data sourcing and environmental research workflows
  • Develop and maintain interactive R Shiny dashboards for HEW datasets and scientific reporting
  • Assist with peer-reviewed manuscript development, including data analysis, technical writing, editing, and interpretation of findings
  • Provide scientific guidance, analytical support, and interpretation of results to the research team
  • Collaborate with researchers, analysts, and leadership teams supporting environmental and public health initiatives

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Environmental Science, Public Health, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in data science, statistical programming, or computational research support
  • Strong experience using the R programming language
  • Experience working with large-scale geospatial or environmental datasets
  • Experience developing dashboards or interactive visualizations using R Shiny
  • Experience with shell scripting such as Bash
  • Familiarity with batch job scripting or high-performance computing environments such as SLURM
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while supporting collaborative scientific research efforts

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting public health, environmental health, climate, or biomedical research projects
  • Experience contributing to open-source software or research-focused R packages
  • Experience assisting with manuscript preparation or peer-reviewed publications
  • Familiarity with geospatial analysis and statistical modeling techniques
