Job description

Job Overview

As a Senior Product Engineer, you will lead the application and integration of Beckwith Electric's protection, automation, and control solutions across generation, transmission, distribution, substations, DER interconnections, and industrial facilities. Collaborating closely with engineering, sales, business development and customer support, you will help deploy products and solutions that solve customer's challenges by providing tailored solutions - covering from opportunity stage to post sale applications. 
In addition to applications, you will act as the subject matter expert on protection relays, controls, and provide thought leadership and play a vital role in product development.

A Day In The Life

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company's safety and attendance policies.
  • Work closely with the sales & commercial organization, engineering, R&D, and business development teams to develop and refine customer solutions utilizing Beckwith/Hubbell Protection & Control products and services. 
  • Be the voice of customer internally for product and solutions development.
  • Provide thought leadership by participating in industry conferences, tradeshows, demos, customer visits, and publishing technical papers either as marketing collateral or for industry publications.
  • Provide support in developing product roadmap, writing market/product requirements, and generating technical marketing content.
  • Investigate / troubleshoot specific customer or product problems and propose solutions and changes that may be required for satisfactory resolution on an as needed basis.
  • Review customer specifications, drawings, and other customer documents to assure proper application and operation of the company's products and systems. Provide pre-sales application assistance for quotations and bids.
  • As required, act as a product expert in providing remote or on-site application support for new product installations, approvals, homologation, or pilot projects.
  • Assist with planning and execution of product launches, seminars, webinars, and promotional activities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%.
What will help you thrive in this role?

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

University degree in Electrical Engineering (Bachelors minimum, preferably Masters) or equivalent with a focus on power systems protection & control.  Minimum 10 years of experience in the field of utility or industrial power systems

Minimum 5 years of experience working in or with utilities' substation, transmission, distribution, grid automation, grid modernization, operations, or standards group. Proven technical experience with protection & control IEDs

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Understanding of basic electrical safety and 3-phase power theory

Protection & Control IED settings development (Protection, Control, Automation, Logic, Communications, Monitoring, Metering, Reporting)

Working knowledge of major IED configuration tools from vendors such as GE, SEL, ABB, Siemens, Hitachi, and Schneider Electric.

Understanding of IED testing tools from vendors such as Omicron, Doble, Megger.

Application knowledge of IEC 61850, Sampled Values, Digital Substation, Merging Units, Centralized Protection, and Virtual Protection.

Understanding of communication, time synchronization, and redundancy protocols used within protection and control devices (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC103/104, PTP, PRP) and familiarity with substation networking architecture.

Advanced knowledge of protection functions, ANSI function numbers, and their applications (overcurrent, voltage, frequency, distance, power, directional, differential, impedance, distribution automation)

Understanding of the IEEE/ANSI/IEC/NERC standards as it relates to the protection functions.

Ability to comprehend, review, and create single line diagrams for substations, transmission, and distribution systems.

Ability to troubleshoot power system events based on settings files, sequence of events, reports, and oscillography data.

Basic understanding of firmware/software development, product certifications, compliance testing, safety testing and standards-based product testing.


LANGUAGES & COMMUNICATION

Mandatory fluency in English (Ability to write technical content and effectively present to an audience)

Fluency in other languages such as Spanish/Portuguese is a plus.
