Remote Game Simulation Programmer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Game Simulation Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Game Simulation Programmer, you need strong programming skills (typically in C++ or C#), a solid understanding of physics/mathematics, and experience with game development, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, version control systems (e.g., Git), and debugging tools is essential, with certifications in game development being advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are critical soft skills for collaborating within distributed teams. These skills ensure robust, realistic simulations, efficient workflow, and successful integration within the broader development process.

How do Remote Game Simulation Programmers typically collaborate with designers and other developers while working from different locations?

Remote Game Simulation Programmers frequently use project management tools, version control systems, and regular video meetings to stay aligned with designers, artists, and other programmers. Clear communication is essential, as programmers need to interpret design documents, provide technical feedback, and ensure that simulations function as intended within the game world. Collaboration often happens through shared repositories and agile development practices, allowing team members to review code, exchange ideas, and solve issues efficiently despite being geographically distributed.

What does a Remote Game Simulation Programmer do?

A Remote Game Simulation Programmer designs, develops, and maintains the underlying systems that simulate real-world or fantastical behaviors in video games, such as physics, AI, or environmental interactions. Working remotely, they collaborate with other developers and designers to create realistic and engaging game experiences, often using programming languages like C++ or C#. Their work ensures that in-game actions and events behave as intended, helping to bring the game's world to life for players.

What is the difference between Remote Game Simulation Programmer vs Remote Game Developer?

AspectRemote Game Simulation ProgrammerRemote Game Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Programming skills, experience with simulation toolsBachelor's in Computer Science, Programming skills, game design knowledge
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with designers and engineers on simulation systemsWorks on overall game development, including gameplay and mechanics
Industry UsageUsed in simulation-heavy games, training apps, VR experiencesUsed across all game genres for core development

The Remote Game Simulation Programmer specializes in creating realistic simulation systems within games, focusing on physics, AI, and environment interactions. In contrast, the Remote Game Developer has a broader role, handling overall game design, coding, and gameplay features. Both roles require strong programming skills and often overlap, but the simulation programmer concentrates on simulation fidelity and technical accuracy.

Job description

About PubNub

PubNub powers the world's most engaging real-time experiences including chat, live updates, and interactive applications for over 2,000 companies including Verizon, Autodesk, Zillow, and Dropbox. Our global data network processes trillions of messages each month with sub-100 ms latency across 15+ data centers. Backed by $130M in funding, we're shaping the future of how the world connects.

What this role is really about

You will be the person customers call when they need to build something that has to work — at scale, in real time, with no room for "it usually works."

This role sits at the intersection of:

  • Event-driven architecture
  • Distributed systems
  • Applied AI

You won't just design solutions — you'll build prototypes, guide implementations, and help customers get to production.

What you'll do

  • Design real-time architectures for use cases like live events, IoT, digital health, and real-time commerce
  • Build working prototypes and demo applications using APIs, SDKs, and AI capabilities
  • Run hands-on workshops with customers and engineering teams
  • Partner with Sales to shape deals and accelerate adoption
  • Translate customer needs into product feedback for Engineering
  • Create reusable architecture patterns and technical assets

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years in solutions architecture, solutions engineering, or a deeply technical customer-facing role
  • Strong coding ability in JavaScript, Python, or Java
  • Experience with APIs, SDKs, and distributed systems
  • Familiarity with real-time or event-driven architectures (Pub/Sub, WebSockets, streaming)
  • Ability to work directly with customers and engineers to design and build systems
  • Curiosity about AI systems (LLMs, RAG, automation workflows)

What success looks like

  • Build reusable prototype applications that accelerate deals
  • Help customers move from concept → production faster
  • Influence architecture decisions across enterprise customers
  • Contribute to product direction through real-world use cases

What this role is not

  • Not a pure demo role
  • Not pre-sales only
  • Not an implementation-only role
  • Not isolated from Product or Engineering

Why Join PubNub

  • Work on real-time solutions at internet scale across industries like healthcare, fintech, streaming, and gaming
  • Competitive Total Compensation in the range of USD 175,000 – USD 180,000
  • Remote-first culture with flexibility across the United States (Central/Eastern time zone preferred)
  • Equity in a profitable, fast-growing infrastructure company
  • Inclusive, growth-focused team where your impact is recognized

Additional Information

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship
  • PubNub is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity

If you enjoy solving real-world system challenges and building things that actually get used in production, we'd love to hear from you.
