What does a remote game developer do?

As a remote developer, your duties and responsibilities involve programming the algorithms and code that control mobile, online, and computer video games. You work from home to develop action sequences in games, graphical user interfaces, and other basic tools that allow for seamless user gameplay. You must ensure that the software is compatible with console or computer requirements, such as memory usage and graphics chip limitations, and be able to identify and fix glitches in the game quickly. In this role, you virtually collaborate with other programmers and QA testers to ensure that these issues are dealt with systematically.

What does a remote game developer do?

A Remote Game Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains video games while working from a location outside of a traditional office environment. Their responsibilities often include coding, testing, debugging, and collaborating with other team members such as designers and artists through online tools. Remote Game Developers may work on creating new games, updating existing ones, or developing specific features. They rely heavily on communication platforms, version control systems, and project management software to coordinate with their teams. This role allows for flexibility in location but requires strong self-management and technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote game developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as C++, C#, or Unity), a solid understanding of game design principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with game engines (like Unity or Unreal Engine), version control systems (e.g., Git), and sometimes specialized certifications are important technical assets. Effective communication, time management, and collaborative problem-solving are crucial soft skills for remote teamwork and project success. These skills and qualities enable developers to create high-quality games, meet deadlines, and work efficiently within distributed teams.

How do remote game developers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote game developers often work closely with artists, designers, and other programmers who may be in various locations around the world. To ensure smooth collaboration, teams usually rely on project management tools, version control systems, and regular virtual meetings scheduled at overlapping hours. Clear communication, documentation, and flexible work hours can help overcome challenges related to time zone differences, ensuring everyone stays aligned on project goals and deadlines. Building strong asynchronous communication habits is key to maintaining productivity and team cohesion.

Job description

Software Engineer (Azure Cloud, Data Engineering & Automation) | Hybrid - St. Louis, MO We are looking for a mid to senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate backend services, data pipelines, and automation on Microsoft Azure. You will own work end to end, from requirements and design through coding, testing, deployment, and production support.

This is a general-purpose engineering role with a strong data engineering and cloud infrastructure focus, so you should be comfortable moving between application code, data plumbing, and the underlying Azure infrastructure. Most of our services are serverless (Azure Functions in Python and TypeScript), our warehouse is Snowflake, and our source systems are primarily SQL Server based. You will work in a collaborative, CLI-forward environment and will be expected to help raise the bar on engineering practices across the team.

What's in it for You Competitive Salary: $100,000.00+ / year; based on experience and qualifications. Work Site Location: Hybrid Schedule; St. Louis, MO

Must be local to the Greater St. Louis Area. Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision insurance plans, 401(k) with employer matching contributions, paid time off (PTO) policy, paid holidays, disability coverage, and life insurance options.

Career Growth: Career growth opportunities at GardaWorld Key Responsibilities Design, build, and operate serverless backend services and automations as Azure Functions in both Python and TypeScript, and own them in production. Build and maintain data pipelines that integrate source systems (for example WinTeam and other SQL Server databases) with Snowflake; write and optimize SQL for extraction, transformation, and reporting. Design event-driven and asynchronous workflows using Azure messaging primitives such as Event Grid, Service Bus, and Storage Queues, including long-running and decoupled processing patterns.

Integrate with internal and third-party APIs over REST, including authentication flows such as OAuth 2.0, and with services like Microsoft Graph and vendor platforms. Manage cloud infrastructure as code using Terraform (including importing existing resources), with static analysis in the pipeline, and configure identity, access, and networking (managed identity, RBAC/IAM, VNet, private endpoints, private DNS). Instrument and monitor services using observability tooling (for example Datadog), improving reliability, alerting, and diagnosability of what we run

Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize existing services, queries, and infrastructure, including production incidents. Participate in code reviews and Git-based workflows, contribute to shared engineering standards, and support cross-functional initiatives such as business continuity planning. Required Skills Python: experience working with production backend services and data tooling.

TypeScript / Node.js: solid experience writing maintainable backend code with a strong grasp of the type system. Microsoft Azure: hands-on experience with Azure, especially serverless compute (Azure Functions), storage, and identity. SQL: proficiency with relational databases (SQL Server / T-SQL), including data modeling and query optimization

Data warehousing: experience moving and modeling data in a cloud warehouse such as Snowflake (or a comparable platform). APIs and integration: designing and consuming REST APIs, working with JSON, and handling auth flows such as OAuth 2.0. Version control: fluency with Git and collaborative branching, review, and release workflows

Working environment: comfortable in a CLI-driven workflow (shell, remote access and debugging) on macOS or Linux. Preferred Skills Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, plus IaC static analysis tooling such as Checkov. Azure messaging and networking: Event Grid, Service Bus, managed identity, and private networking (VNet, private endpoints, private DNS zones).

Observability: experience with Datadog or similar metrics, logging, and tracing tooling, including custom instrumentation. Snowflake and data tooling: async query patterns and pipeline orchestration. Secure integrations: Microsoft Graph API, and encrypted data exchange such as PGP or S/MIME.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 5+ years of professional software development experience, with meaningful time spent on cloud and data engineering (a combination of education and work experience may be considered). A track record of owning services in production and operating what you build.

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to learn new tools and domains quickly. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders across operations and finance.
