Job Title: Software Developer (Java / Spring)

Location: Remote (U.S.), with occasional travel as required

Clearance: Must be a US Citizen able to OBTAIN a favorable Public Trust

AttainX Inc. is seeking a Software Developer to design, build, and maintain robust, reliable back-end systems for our Federal Government customers. The ideal candidate specializes in designing and implementing RESTful APIs and microservices using Java and the Spring framework, and brings hands-on experience deploying and operating applications in the cloud. This is a strong fit for a back-end engineer who is committed to code quality, effective team communication, and modernizing legacy applications to enable cloud migration.

Working within an Agile/SAFe delivery team, the developer will deliver enhancements, diagnose and resolve production issues, build reusable frameworks that accelerate delivery, and contribute to the ongoing quality and reliability of mission-critical, customer-facing applications.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 4+ years of professional software development experience with a focus on back-end systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing with Java and the Spring framework (Spring Boot, Spring Data, and Spring MVC).
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing RESTful web services and microservice architectures.
  • Hands-on experience developing, deploying, and operating applications in a public cloud environment, including core compute, storage, serverless, and API services.
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL) and ORM technologies such as Hibernate.
  • Proficiency writing automated unit tests (JUnit/Mockito) and using static analysis tools (e.g., SonarQube) to drive code quality.
  • Experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD tooling (e.g., Jenkins).
  • Experience delivering in Agile or SAFe environments, including participation in sprint planning, estimation, and demos.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across development, testing, and operations teams.
  • Experience with Animal and Plant Health certificates, including the development or support of systems that issue veterinary export health certificates and phytosanitary (plant health) certificates (e.g., USDA APHIS certification systems).
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Public Trust background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS certification such as AWS Certified Developer – Associate or AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, with hands-on experience across services such as Lambda, API Gateway, CloudWatch, EC2, and S3.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
  • Certified SAFe® Agilist (SAFe 6) or equivalent Agile certification.
  • Experience modernizing and upgrading legacy applications to enable cloud migration, including technical discovery, effort estimation, and dependency analysis.
  • Familiarity with front-end web technologies such as React or Angular.
  • Working knowledge of additional languages such as Python, JavaScript, or C++.
  • Prior experience supporting federal government IT programs.

Job Duties:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain back-end services, RESTful APIs, and microservices using Java and the Spring framework.
  • Implement enhancements and new features for mission-critical, customer-facing applications as part of an Agile delivery team.
  • Diagnose high-severity production defects and develop and deploy rapid hotfixes to minimize downtime.
  • Develop comprehensive automated unit tests in alignment with organizational standards and leverage tools such as SonarQube to drive continuous improvement in code quality.
  • Build, deploy, and operate application components in the cloud, and support performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Modernize and upgrade legacy applications to enable cloud migration, including leading technical discovery, estimating upgrade effort, identifying dependencies, and creating development tickets.
  • Develop reusable frameworks and patterns that accelerate the development and maintenance of web services and future project delivery.
  • Contribute to and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support consistent, automated builds, testing, and deployments.
  • Support release, regression, and user acceptance testing activities and assist with deployment coordination.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including design notes, deployment guides, and knowledge base content.
  • Participate in Agile/SAFe ceremonies and collaborate with product owners, testers, and operations staff to improve delivery and system quality.
