About the Role

Grocery is Uber's newest and fastest growing business line, delighting customers with next-hour delivery of household essentials from their favorite local stores. The Grocery Fulfillment org is focused on building best-in-class technology and products to support consumers and shoppers in fulfilling grocery orders - from the moment an order is placed, until it is successfully delivered to consumers. The org works with key platform teams across Uber to build tailored fulfillment capabilities for Grocery and Retail. 

The Grocery Fulfillment team is looking for a Senior Staff Engineer to help lead the team's ambitious and fast-paced technical strategy. This is an important and visible role with a potential for significant impact on the fast growing grocery business. The IC lead will work across multiple Grocery Fulfillment initiatives, and collaborate with engineering, product and data science leads to help build platforms and products that power the grocery business. For an IC lead with technical depth, hands-on execution muscle and strong business sense, this will be an excellent opportunity to learn, succeed and grow at Uber.

What the Candidate Will Do:

  • Lead and inspire a team of engineers working on grocery fulfillment capabilities
  • Strategize and drive our fulfillment architecture focusing on scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Work closely with product teams to understand business requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions
  • Build relationships and influence across key platform teams at Uber, and partner in building high impact solutions
  • Lean on technical experience to facilitate technical decision making and raise the bar on the team's engineering craft

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Computer Science with over 10 years of industry experience
  • A proven track record of excellence at the Sr. Staff Engineer level or higher within a leading technology company
  • In-depth, hands-on experience with large-scale distributed systems in a production environment.
  • Bias for action, and thriving in a fast-paced engineering culture to solve business problems and compound impact
  • Proficiency in programming languages like (C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership in mentoring a team of backend and mobile engineers


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Domain expertise in logistics, fulfillment or payments areas

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $267,000 per year - USD $297,000 per year.


For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
