What is a remote front end engineer?

Remote Front End Engineers are software developers who specialize in building the user-facing parts of websites and web applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams via online communication tools and are often responsible for ensuring that web applications are responsive, accessible, and performant across different devices and browsers.

How do remote front end engineers typically collaborate with design and back-end teams to ensure seamless project delivery?

Remote Front End Engineers often use collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, and Figma to communicate effectively with both design and back-end teams. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help bridge the gap caused by physical distance. Engineers are expected to participate in code reviews, provide feedback on UI/UX designs, and coordinate API integrations to ensure a smooth workflow. Clear communication and proactive engagement with team members are key to overcoming challenges that arise from remote collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote front end engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Front End Engineer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Angular, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools, and UI/UX design principles is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills are crucial for effective remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies ensure high-quality, maintainable user interfaces and seamless teamwork in a distributed environment.

Job description

Candidates local to Kansas City, MO; Colorado Springs, CO; or Owings Mills, MD who are able to commit to our onsite hybrid work model are strongly preferred.

Role Summary

As a Lead Software Engineer on the Retiree Income platform team at T. Rowe Price, you will play a pivotal role as a senior technical leader overseeing the design, development, and operation of SaaS applications, services, and infrastructure supporting our retirement income planning and holistic advice solutions. You will blend expert, hands-on engineering with daily leadership in a cross-functional Agile environment (including both frontend and backend disciplines) to deliver secure, scalable, and maintainable products that serve both intermediary and direct channels. In this role, you will help define engineering standards, guide architectural decisions, and ensure solutions align with T. Rowe Price's quality benchmarks, business needs, and Global Technology strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the full lifecycle of platform components and services, including design, development, testing, and deployment. Demonstrate advanced hands-on expertise in technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and modern frontend frameworks like Vue.js to deliver features into production.
  • Define and implement comprehensive testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end, performance), emphasizing automation and clear quality metrics.
  • Debug and resolve complex system issues, including codebases you did not author; manage root cause analysis and drive solutions to completion.
  • Take ownership of the quality, maintainability, security, and total cost of ownership (TCO) for your services and components. Proactively address technical debt and manage lifecycle considerations.
  • Establish and promote coding standards, code review processes, and SDLC best practices that can be leveraged across multiple teams and services.
  • Influence platform and enterprise technical strategy by making pragmatic build-vs-buy and design decisions in alignment with business priorities and risk.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies, and assess their applicability to drive business value.
  • Communicate complex technical ideas effectively to non-technical stakeholders and senior leaders, translating business objectives into actionable engineering plans.
  • Utilize deep domain expertise in areas such as client profiling, goal planning, retirement income planning, cash-flow analysis, tax and investment planning, and integrations with third-party systems to deliver differentiated experiences for clients and advisors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree, or equivalent education and relevant experience.
  • 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including demonstrated technical leadership.
  • Proven expertise in architecting, building, and deploying software solutions within the wealth management sector (e.g., portfolio construction, investment management, financial planning, CRM).
  • Experience designing and implementing flexible, scalable, reliable SaaS platforms that support a range of applications, users, delivery models (B2C, B2B2C), and channels.
  • Advanced proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and modern frontend frameworks such as Vue.js (or similar), with hands-on involvement across the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong background in automated testing methodologies and frameworks, with the ability to define and enforce product-level test strategies.
  • Experience setting code review standards and providing technical oversight for development activities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills, including the ability to work with unfamiliar codebases.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical and business concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred:

  • Experience building and operating solutions in AWS or comparable public cloud environments, including familiarity with cloud-native services, security, reliability, and cost optimization.
