What is a remote front end engineer?

Remote Front End Engineers are software developers who specialize in building the user-facing parts of websites and web applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams via online communication tools and are often responsible for ensuring that web applications are responsive, accessible, and performant across different devices and browsers.

How do remote front end engineers typically collaborate with design and back-end teams to ensure seamless project delivery?

Remote Front End Engineers often use collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, and Figma to communicate effectively with both design and back-end teams. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help bridge the gap caused by physical distance. Engineers are expected to participate in code reviews, provide feedback on UI/UX designs, and coordinate API integrations to ensure a smooth workflow. Clear communication and proactive engagement with team members are key to overcoming challenges that arise from remote collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote front end engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Front End Engineer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Angular, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools, and UI/UX design principles is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills are crucial for effective remote collaboration and project delivery. These competencies ensure high-quality, maintainable user interfaces and seamless teamwork in a distributed environment.

What is the difference between Remote Front End Engineer vs Remote Web Developer?

AspectRemote Front End EngineerRemote Web Developer

Work EnvironmentCollaborates with designers and back-end developers on complex UI projectsBuilds and maintains websites, often with broader scope including backend tasks
Industry UsageTech, e-commerce, SaaS companies focusing on user interfacesVarious industries including marketing, media, and small business websites

Remote Front End Engineers focus primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces using advanced frameworks, often working closely with designers and back-end teams. Remote Web Developers may handle both front-end and some back-end tasks, with a broader scope in website development. While both roles require similar technical skills, the Front End Engineer role emphasizes UI/UX and interactive features, making it more specialized in front-end technologies.

We are the trusted advisers that enable Ford to clearly see business conditions, customer needs, and the competitive landscape. With our support, key decision-makers can act in meaningful, positive ways. Join us and use your data expertise and software engineering skills to drive evidence-based, timely decision-making.

Position Overview
Quality Analytics is a product group within GDIA that builds cutting-edge on-premises and cloud analytics solutions. We are modernizing our portfolio by embedding Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), and autonomous agentic workflows to revolutionize how Ford manages industrial data.

This Full-Stack Software Engineer position is ideal for a technically oriented, forward-thinking individual who has experience designing, building, and deploying cloud applications, owning Google Cloud Platform (GCP) infrastructure with hands-on Terraform expertise, and who is eager to pioneer the use of Agentic AI and LLMs to solve complex industrial analytics challenges.

Minimum Requirements We Seek

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related quantitative/technology field.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in Software Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience with modern frontend frameworks (Angular, React, or Vue).
  • 3+ years of experience with backend frameworks (FastAPI, Flask, Django, or Spring Boot).
  • 2+ years of experience with Python (highly preferred for AI/Data) and/or Java.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)-compute, storage, networking, and IAM.
  • 2+ years of experience authoring and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) via Terraform modules, including remote state management and CI/CD-driven plan/apply workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience integrating LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex AI) or open-source models into production software applications.
  • AI & Agentic Frameworks: Experience with LLM orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex) and multi-agent development platforms (e.g., CrewAI, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel).
  • Advanced GCP & DevOps: GCP Certification (e.g., Professional Cloud Architect or DevOps Engineer); hands-on experience with Cloud Build, Tekton, multi-environment Terraform deployment, and multi-cloud architectures (Azure/AWS a plus).
  • Software Craftsmanship: Deep understanding of software engineering disciplines including eXtreme Programming (XP), Clean Code principles, Test-Driven Development (TDD), and Pair/Mob programming.
  • Agile Mindset: Comfortable working with Agile tools (Jira, Rally) in a fast-paced, continuous-delivery environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a passion for bringing cutting-edge technology to business partners and customers.

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:

  • Immediate medical, dental, and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care, parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members, and management leases
