What is a remote fractional controller?

A Remote Fractional Controller is a financial professional who provides part-time, high-level accounting oversight and financial management services to organizations, typically working remotely. Rather than being a full-time employee, they work on a contract or fractional basis, serving multiple clients at once. Their responsibilities often include overseeing accounting operations, preparing financial statements, ensuring compliance, and providing strategic financial guidance to support business growth. This model allows companies to access experienced financial leadership without the cost of a full-time controller.

How does a remote fractional controller typically collaborate with clients and internal teams to ensure accurate financial reporting?

As a Remote Fractional Controller, you will regularly coordinate with client management, accounting staff, and sometimes external auditors to oversee financial reporting and compliance. Most of your collaboration occurs virtually, using project management and communication tools to share updates, clarify data, and set deadlines. Building strong relationships and clear communication channels is essential, as you often juggle multiple clients and need to adapt to different workflows and reporting standards. Expect to lead or join weekly financial review meetings, provide guidance on process improvements, and ensure all deliverables meet client expectations and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote fractional controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Fractional Controller, you need strong accounting expertise, a deep understanding of financial reporting, and typically a CPA or similar credential. Proficiency in cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks Online, Xero, or NetSuite, and familiarity with financial analytics tools is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you build trust with clients and manage multiple accounts remotely. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic value for diverse clients in a flexible, remote environment.

Job description

Fractional Controller
Finance as a Service (FaaS) | GovCon, Non-Profit, & Growth Companies | Contractor
About ROSE
At Rose Financial Solutions, we believe finance should not be a reporting function. It should be a strategic engine for growth.
We are on a mission to automate 85% of finance and accounting by 2030, building a proactive, decision-ready infrastructure that empowers leaders to scale with confidence. Our platform, Easby, sits at the center of everything we do: connecting data, automating routine work, and giving clients near-real-time financial clarity.
The Opportunity
We are building a collective of experienced controllers who want to grow into something bigger.
This is not a typical fractional controller role. It is a structured path. The controllers who join ROSE at this level gain hands-on experience across multiple client environments, deep exposure to our FaaS model and Easby platform, and direct mentorship from senior CFO-level leaders. For the right person, this is how you build the breadth, confidence, and advisory skills to move into a CFO seat.
You will serve as the financial backbone for growing organizations, typically $2M to $50M+, while being part of a team that is redefining what finance looks like.
What You'll Do
  • Own the monthly close process for a portfolio of clients, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and audit-readiness
  • Produce financial statements and management reports that clients can actually use to make decisions
  • Monitor and enforce internal controls, identifying gaps before they become problems
  • Support DCAA, FAR, and indirect rate compliance for GovCon clients
  • Work inside Easby to manage transactions, approvals, reconciliations, and reporting workflows
  • Collaborate with ROSE CFO Members and Controllers to deliver integrated financial management
  • Support nonprofit clients with grant tracking, membership revenue, and donation accounting, ensuring funds are properly restricted, recognized, and reported
  • Prepare or support audit-ready financial packages, including schedules and documentation for external auditors and grant compliance reviewers
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and build more scalable routines
  • Participate in client-facing meetings, translating financial data into clear, actionable guidance

What Makes This Role Different
At most firms, a controller closes the books and waits for instructions. At ROSE, you are part of a system designed to do more.
You will not just:
  • Process transactions
  • Produce backward-looking reports
  • Work in isolation

You will:
  • Build financial infrastructure that scales with your clients
  • Develop advisory instincts through exposure to CFO-level decision-making
  • Work with AI tools and automation that eliminate the manual work, so you can focus on what matters
  • Grow inside a firm that promotes from within and measures your development, not just your output

The Path Forward
This role was designed with intention. ROSE is growing its Strategic Fractional CFO practice, and we are seeking controllers who are ready to grow with it. Over time, contractors in this role gain:
  • Exposure to CFO-level strategic work across industries including GovCon, nonprofits, and founder-led growth companies
  • Training in ROSE's financial management framework, including FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, and performance advisory
  • Mentorship from senior ROSE CFO Members and Controllers
  • A defined pathway into fractional CFO engagements for those ready to take on that responsibility

The right person will not need to look elsewhere to become the CFO they want to be. They will build that here.
Who You Are
  • 5 to 12 years of accounting or finance experience, with real close ownership and not just support
  • Hands-on experience with financial reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls
  • Exposure to GovCon, government contracting compliance, or regulated industries is a strong plus
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, including grant management, restricted and unrestricted fund tracking, membership revenue, donor reporting, or audit preparation, is a meaningful differentiator
  • Comfortable working across multiple client environments simultaneously
  • Curious about technology, open to learning new platforms, and not attached to doing things the old way
  • You communicate clearly with non-finance stakeholders and do not hide behind jargon
  • You are a team player in the real sense: no silos, no hand-offs without context, no single points of failure
  • You want to grow into more responsibility, not just execute a defined task list

Why ROSE
  • Work with high-growth companies and mission-driven leaders across a range of industries
  • Be part of a firm redefining finance through FaaS, AI, and Easby
  • Flexible contractor structure with real mentorship and a path toward fractional CFO work
  • Collaborate with a team of experts across accounting, tax, compliance, and financial technology
  • A culture built on honesty, accountability, and genuine investment in your professional development

Ready to Build Something?
If you are a skilled controller who wants more than a close cycle, and you are ready to grow inside a firm that will invest in your development, we want to talk.
Apply now and tell us where you are in your career and where you want to go.
