Remote Fractional Controller information

What is a remote fractional controller?

A Remote Fractional Controller is a financial professional who provides part-time, high-level accounting oversight and financial management services to organizations, typically working remotely. Rather than being a full-time employee, they work on a contract or fractional basis, serving multiple clients at once. Their responsibilities often include overseeing accounting operations, preparing financial statements, ensuring compliance, and providing strategic financial guidance to support business growth. This model allows companies to access experienced financial leadership without the cost of a full-time controller.

How does a remote fractional controller typically collaborate with clients and internal teams to ensure accurate financial reporting?

As a Remote Fractional Controller, you will regularly coordinate with client management, accounting staff, and sometimes external auditors to oversee financial reporting and compliance. Most of your collaboration occurs virtually, using project management and communication tools to share updates, clarify data, and set deadlines. Building strong relationships and clear communication channels is essential, as you often juggle multiple clients and need to adapt to different workflows and reporting standards. Expect to lead or join weekly financial review meetings, provide guidance on process improvements, and ensure all deliverables meet client expectations and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote fractional controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Fractional Controller, you need strong accounting expertise, a deep understanding of financial reporting, and typically a CPA or similar credential. Proficiency in cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks Online, Xero, or NetSuite, and familiarity with financial analytics tools is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you build trust with clients and manage multiple accounts remotely. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic value for diverse clients in a flexible, remote environment.

What is the difference between Remote Fractional Controller vs Remote Bookkeeper?

AspectRemote Fractional ControllerRemote Bookkeeper
CredentialsCPA or equivalent accounting certifications, financial expertiseBookkeeping certifications or experience, basic accounting knowledge

Employer & Industry UsageMid to large businesses, finance departmentsSmall businesses, startups, small-scale operations

The Remote Fractional Controller typically handles strategic financial oversight and high-level reporting, requiring advanced certifications like CPA. In contrast, a Remote Bookkeeper focuses on daily transaction recording and basic financial data management. While both roles support business financial health, the Controller's role is more strategic and senior, whereas the Bookkeeper's role is operational and entry-level.

Job description

Location: Remote (US-based) with up to 15% client travel

Employment Type: Full-Time, W-2

Compensation: $120,000 – $180,000 base, plus performance bonus

Reports To: CEO

Start Date: Immediate

Are you a finance leader who gets energized by helping business owners unlock growth, profitability, and generational wealth? Do you love sitting at the leadership table, turning numbers into decisions, and watching clients hit targets they didn't think were possible?

If that sounds like you, we want to meet you.

At Profit with Law and DreamBuilder Financial, our mission is to empower business owners with the financial clarity and strategy they need to build generational wealth. We do this by helping them unlock higher profit margins, operate more efficiently, and make better decisions — all driven by data and strategy.

As our Fractional CFO, you will own the CFO relationship with our portfolio of law firm clients in the $2M–$50M revenue range. You will sit in on their leadership meetings, shape their strategic direction, hold their teams accountable to KPIs, and directly drive the financial results they achieve.

What You'll Own

You are the strategic financial leader for each client. You will interact with and possibly oversee their internal financial team. You will interface with their leadership team and very often drive the agenda of that team.

You will be supported by in-house bookkeepers, business analysts, financial analysts, and controllers. You will use typical accounting applications, FP&A tools, and Power BI. You will explore opportunities for clients to use AI to strengthen their financial processes.

Why Join Us?

At Profit with Law and DreamBuilder Financial, we foster a culture of love, growth, and optimism. We are committed to creating an environment where every employee feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Here are some of the benefits of working with us:

  • Professional Growth: We invest in our employees' development through continuous learning opportunities, mentorship programs, and clear career paths.
  • Collaborative Environment: We believe in teamwork and encourage open communication and idea-sharing across all departments.
  • Impactful Work: Your contributions will directly influence our success and help us achieve our goals of helping clients achieve generational wealth.
  • Rapid Career Advancement: We are a small firm, which means that the opportunity to develop into a leadership role is available immediately.
  • Work-Life Balance: We understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible arrangements and supportive policies.
  • 100% Remote Workforce: Our team is made up of a diverse group of superstars located in countries throughout the world.
  • 13th Month and Holiday Swaps: We recognize the varied needs of our diverse and worldwide staff, and we embrace them by providing a 13th Month holiday bonus as well as our unique holiday swap initiative, which allows each team member to celebrate the days of the year that they want to spend with their family and friends.
Compensation:

$120,000 – $180,000 yearly

Responsibilities:
  • Drive Growth and Profitability: Partner with each client's leadership team to develop and oversee their overall growth and profit plan, including identifying key projects, budgets, and strategic priorities.
  • Provide Insight and Analysis: Work closely with our reporting team to develop meaningful dashboards and reports in our FP&A toolset. Present these to clients with clear explanations and identify the decision drivers that matter most.
  • Establish KPIs and Bonus Structures: The key to driving higher profitability is getting staff to operate in the top 80% of their potential. You will help clients build clear, measurable KPIs and financial incentive structures that tie employee performance to client success.
  • Leadership Team Accountability: Meet monthly with every member of each client's leadership team to review performance against pre-identified goals. Help leaders overcome challenges and stay on track.
  • Guide Structural Changes: Clients are growing from being founder-run to being led by a leadership team. Often, we are helping them identify the gaps in leadership and assist with designing the role, compensation, and structure, as well as the efforts to fill those roles.
  • Review Accounting Processes: Clients typically have a varied level of internal financial staff members. You will review their internal financial systems and determine the skill level of staff and changes or improvements needed for financial processes. You will assist or oversee the month-end closing process.
  • Client Relationship Management: Proactively manage CFO client relationships. Identify and resolve potential issues before they escalate. Be the trusted advisor clients turn to for their biggest financial decisions.
  • Get Results: Perhaps the most fun and the most important — you will be directly responsible for the results clients achieve.

Qualifications:

Required

  • 5+ years of CFO, controller, or senior finance leadership experience serving businesses in the $2–$50M revenue range.
  • Proven track record of driving measurable financial results for clients or employers (margin expansion, cash flow improvement, growth plan execution).
  • Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable decisions for business owners.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills — comfortable leading leadership team meetings and presenting to business owners.
  • Experience building and using FP&A dashboards, financial models, and KPI frameworks.
  • Power user of QuickBooks Online and Excel/Google Sheets.
  • Highly organized and proactive — this role requires someone who drives work forward without waiting for deadlines.
  • Able to manage multiple client relationships concurrently and context-switch effectively.

Nice-to-Have

  • Prior experience as a fractional or outsourced CFO serving multiple clients.
  • Experience working with law firms.
  • Knowledge of the Zoho suite of products.
  • Knowledge of Jirav.
  • CPA, CMA, or MBA.
  • Experience designing employee bonus and incentive structures tied to KPIs.
