Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer information

What is a remote forward deployed software engineer?

A Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer is a software engineer who works offsite (remotely) and is embedded directly with a client or customer team to help implement, customize, and integrate technical solutions. They often serve as both technical experts and liaisons, working closely with clients to understand their needs and deliver tailored software products. Their role typically involves travel or virtual collaboration with client teams, rapid problem-solving, and adapting existing software to unique business requirements. This position requires strong communication skills, technical proficiency, and the ability to work independently from a remote location.

How does a remote forward deployed software engineer typically collaborate with client teams and internal stakeholders?

As a Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer, you'll work closely with client teams to understand their unique technical needs and integrate solutions directly into their environments. Collaboration often happens through regular video calls, shared documentation, and agile project management tools. You'll also coordinate with internal engineering, product, and support teams to ensure that client requirements are met while maintaining high code quality. Building strong communication channels is key to success in this role, as you'll often act as the primary technical liaison between your company and the client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote forward deployed software engineer?

To excel as a Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, experience in software deployment, and a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms, version control systems like Git, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you collaborate with clients and distributed teams effectively. These abilities ensure you can deliver tailored technical solutions efficiently and adapt to the unique challenges of remote and client-facing environments.

What is the difference between Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineer vs Remote Software Engineer?

AspectRemote Forward Deployed Software EngineerRemote Software Engineer
FocusDirectly interacts with clients and deploys solutions on-site or close to the customerDevelops software primarily in a remote environment without direct client deployment responsibilities
Work EnvironmentHybrid or on-site with client engagementFully remote, often within a development team
ResponsibilitiesCustomizing, deploying, and maintaining solutions at client locationsDesigning, coding, and testing software applications
Skills & CertificationsStrong communication, deployment, and client-facing skills; relevant certifications varyProgramming, software development, and possibly cloud certifications

The main difference is that Remote Forward Deployed Software Engineers work closely with clients, deploying solutions on-site or near the customer, while Remote Software Engineers focus on developing software remotely without direct deployment duties. Both roles require technical expertise, but their work environments and responsibilities differ significantly.

Key responsibilities

  • Build workflows and multi-agent systems in Synera that show fast value to customers

  • Identify valuable next use cases with customers

  • Fill missing functionality with scripts, web node automations, and custom add-ins

Job description

Are you a problem-solver with a passion for automation and AI? At Synera, we're looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) who enjoys solving meaningful problems, collaborating with customers, and crafting innovative workflows that make a real impact. If you're ready to help companies like NASA, BMW, and Airbus transform their engineering processes, keep reading!
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Build workflows and multi-agent systems in Synera that show fast value to customers
  • Identify valuable next use cases with customers
  • Regularly visit customers (up to 50%)
  • Fill missing functionality with scripts, web node automations and custom add-ins
  • Optimize prompts of agents and multi-agent systems to make them reliable
  • Communicate closely with Synera product managers to bring temporary solutions into the product

What a week at Synera might look like:
  • Monday: Kick off the week with the Customer Success Manager (CSM) for your customer(s) to align on key priorities for the week.
  • Tuesday: Build a new workflow for the extraction of costing-relevant CAD data on example geometries.
  • Wednesday: Lead a workshop at one of your customers, working hands-on to incorporate the costing workflow into a multi-agent system on real data.
  • Thursday: You keep up to date with the developer teams in their sprint review meeting and give valuable user insights to the product managers. You finalize the workflow.
  • Friday: Join the knowledge exchange session with fellow FDEs and Solution Engineers.
Join our next Summer Event in Germany: relax, and have fun together with other Synerians!
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
We believe in transparent conversations about compensation from the start. For this role, our planned salary range is:
  • Intermediate Level: 122,300-152,500 USD (OTE)
  • Experienced Level: 149,600-194,200 USD (OTE)

We determine the level we hire you for based on your experience, the scope of responsibilities you'll take on, and the impact you can drive. While we typically hire within these bands, we're open to some flexibility for candidates who bring exceptional value to the role.
Check out this page to learn how we approach salary, career growth, and creating an environment where everyone can shine.
What we offer beyond salary:
  • You're in the front row of an AI transformation - supporting a product that is actively changing how the world's top engineering teams work, not a commodity.
  • Work alongside a team of passionate engineers who are not only building cutting-edge tech solutions - but also genuinely care about helping customers and each other succeed.
  • Collaborate with leading brands like Hyundai, NASA or Airbus towards a new era of automation efficiency and cross-team collaboration in product development.
  • Benefit from a wide range of employee perks - including gym pass support, health insurance and a 401 (k) savings plan.
  • We don't believe in one-fits-all solutions and therefore let you decide when & where to work (as long as you have a residency in the US).
  • We'll support you in setting up a productive home office.
  • Enjoy flexible public holidays and swap days off according to your values and beliefs.
  • Spend time together with your colleagues during regular team events and off-sites (two big off-sites in Germany).

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
Even if you don't meet these criteria perfectly but believe you have lots to bring to the role, we encourage you to apply. We know it's tough, but please keep in mind that you don't have to match all the listed requirements exactly to be considered for this role.
  • You resonate with Synera's Core Values - they're central to how we work, and we'll explore them together in your first interview.
  • You are a US permanent resident located on the West Coast.
  • You have technical background in the Computational, Automation or Mechanical Engineering field.
  • You have proven experience in working with customers, demonstrating strong communication skills and the ability to showcase business value with technical solutions.
  • You have experience with CAD/CAE tools (e.g. OptiStruct, Siemens NX, CATIA, ANSYS, Nastran, Abaqus, LS-DYNA etc.).
  • You have experience and/or deep interest in AI (LLMs, prompt engineering, vibe coding).
  • You can juggle multiple priorities and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • You enjoy collaborating with clients and explaining complex topics in a clear, engaging manner.
  • Customer Engagement: This role includes around 40% travel for customer visits, workshops, and on-site collaboration mainly on the West Coast.
  • If you already have working experience with Synera and/or C# and Python coding it's a plus

P.S. Synera is a place where everyone can grow, and every voice is valued. So, however you identify and whatever background you bring with you, please apply if this is a role that would make you excited to come into work every day. We're looking forward to learning how your perspective will bring something unique and valuable to our team
Why Synera?
We're building the next generation of software for hardware - an Agentic AI platform that lets companies like Airbus, BMW, and NASA accelerate engineering work from days to hours. Our customers use Synera to automate everything from CAD and simulation workflows to design-for-manufacturing checks and RFQ prep - without needing to write code from scratch.
Think of us as doing for engineering what the advent of CAD did decades ago: enabling a whole new way of working. As PLM, CAD and CAE tools open up APIs, Synera gives teams the ability to build scalable, AI-augmented workflows that link these tools together. We're not just streamlining old processes-we're helping engineers hand off repetitive work to automation and AI agents that understand their domain.
If you're a solutions engineer who's automated design or simulation processes, glued together tools with Python and felt the frustration of being the only one who could, Synera is the next step. Join us at the leading edge.
