What does Remote First mean in the context of jobs?

'Remote First' refers to a work policy or company culture where working remotely is the default mode of operation. Employees are encouraged or expected to work from locations outside of a traditional office, and company systems, communication, and workflows are designed to support remote work. While some in-person workspaces may be available, they are typically optional or secondary. This approach allows for greater flexibility, access to a broader talent pool, and often improved work-life balance for employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote First employee?

To thrive in a Remote First role, you need strong self-management, digital communication, and time management skills, often supported by prior remote work experience and proficiency in collaborative platforms. Familiarity with tools like Slack, Zoom, project management software, and secure remote access systems is crucial. Proactive communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote environments. These abilities ensure productivity, collaboration, and accountability without direct in-person supervision.

What are the main challenges and benefits of working in a Remote First company environment?

Working in a remote-first company offers flexibility and the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team from various locations, but it also presents unique challenges. Remote employees often need to be proactive communicators and manage their own schedules to stay productive, as daily interactions can be less spontaneous than in a traditional office. Building strong relationships and maintaining team cohesion requires intentional effort through digital tools and regular virtual meetings. However, remote-first environments typically provide autonomy, support for work-life balance, and access to roles regardless of geographic location, making them appealing for many professionals.

What is the difference between Remote First vs Remote Customer Support Specialist?

AspectRemote First
Work EnvironmentCompany prioritizes remote work for all employees, with flexible policies and minimal in-office requirements.
Required CredentialsTypically requires relevant experience in remote work settings, communication skills, and industry-specific knowledge.

Remote First companies fully embrace remote work as the standard, whereas Remote Customer Support Specialists are specific roles within such companies, focusing on customer interactions remotely. The main difference lies in company policy versus role function, with Remote First indicating company-wide remote policies and Remote Customer Support Specialist referring to a job position within that framework.

Director of Business Development - Energy & Resources (70312475)

Sodexo Canada Ltd

Calgary, AB • Remote

Full-time

Posted 20 days ago

Job description

Company Description

At Sodexo, we create environments where people thrive - from remote mining camps and industrial operations to workplaces, healthcare facilities, and campuses across Canada. We are a global leader in sustainable food services and integrated facilities management, serving millions every day through solutions that improve quality of life.

Our Energy & Resources business in Quebec is entering an important growth phase, and we are looking for a high-performing business development leader to help expand our presence across mining, industrial, infrastructure, and remote-site operations.

Our team is seeking a disciplined, commercially driven hunter who knows how to open doors, build executive relationships, create opportunities, navigate complex organizations, and win business in highly competitive environments.

Salary: $100,000-$125,000 Base + Competitive Incentive Plan

The Opportunity

Sodexo Canada is seeking a Director of Business Development – Energy & Resources to drive profitable new business growth across Western Canada (BC, AB, and Territories)

  • Mining
  • Industrial operations
  • Remote workforce accommodations
  • Energy and infrastructure projects
  • Integrated food and facilities management environments

The successful candidate will lead complex pursuits involving services such as:

  • Food services
  • Housekeeping
  • Janitorial
  • Facilities management
  • Hospitality and camp support services

While Energy & Resources experience is valuable, we are primarily looking for someone with strong business development capability, complex sales experience, executive relationship skills, and a proven ability to win.

Candidates from other complex B2B industries who bring strong hunting capability and strategic sales discipline are encouraged to apply.

Job Description

How You'll Make an Impact:

The successful candidate will bring strong business acumen, executive presence, resilience, curiosity, and the ability to lead sophisticated pursuits from early-stage relationship development through contract award.

Success in this role requires the ability to balance two very different - but equally critical - capabilities:

  • Aggressively driving strategic sales activity, creating momentum, and winning business in competitive environments
  • Building respectful, long-term Indigenous and community relationships grounded in trust, credibility, and partnership

If you thrive in high-accountability sales environments and are motivated by winning meaningful, complex business, we want to speak with you.

Business Development & Sales Leadership

This role requires a highly proactive and commercially assertive sales leader who can create momentum and drive opportunities forward in competitive environments.

You will:

  • Build and manage a strong pipeline of qualified opportunities
  • Prospect strategically and proactively across targeted markets
  • Develop relationships with executive decision-makers and operational leaders
  • Lead complex sales pursuits from qualification through negotiation and close
  • Navigate sophisticated procurement and RFP environments
  • Coordinate internal teams to develop compelling client solutions and proposals
  • Maintain strong opportunity management discipline, forecasting accuracy, and CRM hygiene

This role requires someone who is comfortable:

  • Creating urgency and advancing opportunities
  • Leading difficult commercial conversations
  • Managing competitive pressure
  • Challenging client thinking professionally and constructively
  • Operating independently while driving accountability internally and externally

Indigenous Partnerships & Relationship Development

Strong Indigenous engagement is critical within the Energy & Resources sector.

This role requires someone who understands that partnership development is built through consistency, respect, credibility, patience, and long-term relationship building — not transactional sales behavior.

You will:

  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and Indigenous business partners
  • Support partnership development aligned with client and regional expectations
  • Participate in long-term relationship and community engagement initiatives
  • Represent Sodexo professionally and credibly in all stakeholder interactions
  • Work collaboratively with Indigenous partners in support of shared opportunity development

This aspect of the role requires humility, strong listening skills, cultural awareness, emotional intelligence, and relationship maturity.

Qualifications

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • 7+ years of successful quota-carrying business development experience
  • Proven track record winning complex, multi-year service or outsourcing contracts
  • Experience selling outsourced operational services, facilities management, hospitality, workforce accommodation, industrial support services, or other complex B2B solutions
  • Demonstrated success developing new business in competitive environments
  • Experience managing sophisticated RFP and solution-based sales processes
  • Experience within mining, energy, industrial, remote-site operations, or related sectors is considered a strong asset, but not required
  • Fully bilingual in French and English
  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills
  • High level of professionalism and business acumen
  • Strong negotiation and closing capabilities
  • Proficiency with CRM systems (Salesforce preferred)
  • Strong Microsoft Office capabilities including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel regularly across Quebec and other target regions (approximately 30–40%)

Professional strengths:

You are:

  • A proactive hunter who creates opportunities rather than waits for them
  • Highly competitive and results-oriented
  • Strong at developing executive-level relationships
  • Commercially strategic and naturally curious
  • Disciplined in pipeline management and opportunity advancement
  • Comfortable operating with autonomy, accountability, and urgency
  • Resilient, persistent, and motivated by winning
  • Skilled at balancing relationship development with strong commercial execution
  • Able to adapt communication style across different stakeholder groups and environments

You also understand that:

  • Different environments require different leadership and communication approaches
  • Trust is earned differently in community relationships than in competitive sales environments
  • Strong relationships and strong commercial discipline are both necessary for long-term success
  • Listening, credibility, and patience are just as important as drive and urgency
