Remote Fire Alarm Designer information

What does a remote fire alarm designer do?

A Remote Fire Alarm Designer is responsible for creating detailed plans and layouts for fire alarm systems, often working from a remote location. They use specialized software to design systems that comply with safety codes and standards, ensuring proper detection and notification coverage. Their work includes collaborating with engineers, project managers, and clients to deliver accurate and effective fire alarm solutions. Remote Fire Alarm Designers also prepare documentation and may assist with system troubleshooting or code compliance questions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote fire alarm designer?

To thrive as a Remote Fire Alarm Designer, you need a strong understanding of fire alarm codes, system design principles, and relevant electrical standards, typically supported by an engineering degree or NICET certification. Proficiency with CAD software, fire alarm system design tools, and remote collaboration platforms is essential. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help ensure accurate designs and smooth coordination with project teams. These skills are crucial for creating compliant, reliable fire alarm systems that protect lives and property while meeting client and regulatory requirements.

How does a remote fire alarm designer typically collaborate with project teams and clients during the design process?

As a Remote Fire Alarm Designer, collaboration is primarily conducted through digital tools such as video conferencing, project management platforms, and shared drawing software. Designers regularly coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure code compliance and integration with overall building plans. Clear communication and timely sharing of documents are crucial, as remote work requires extra attention to detail to avoid misinterpretations. Despite not being on-site, designers often participate in virtual walkthroughs and design reviews to address questions and updates throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between Remote Fire Alarm Designer vs Remote Fire Alarm Technician?

Job description

About the Position

Want to play a key role in delivering large-scale fire alarm systems for some of the most ambitious construction projects in the country? At Power Design, you'll leverage cutting-edge technologies and collaborate with industry-leading professionals to help bring complex life safety systems from design through commissioning.

As a Fire Alarm Systems Programmer, you will design, develop, test, implement, and support fire alarm system programming throughout the project lifecycle. Working from our state-of-the-art corporate headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida, you will collaborate closely with design teams and field technicians to ensure systems are programmed, commissioned, and optimized for successful project delivery.

In this role, you will serve as a key technical liaison between the field and engineering teams, providing remote support during system startups, coordinating field changes, and helping troubleshoot programming and integration challenges. You'll gain exposure to advanced technologies while contributing to the successful execution of large-scale, mission-critical life safety systems nationwide.

Position Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and bench test complex fire alarm system programs for large-scale Power Design projects nationwide, leveraging advanced programming expertise to create system logic, troubleshoot performance issues, validate functionality, and maintain technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and field operations teams to define system requirements and maintain programming standards across projects.
  • Configure, develop, document, and support fire alarm programs throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Provide remote technical support during system startups, troubleshooting system issues, and implementing programming modifications to maintain project schedules.
  • Ensure programming solutions comply with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications while supporting successful system acceptance and turnover.
  • Apply advanced fire alarm systems expertise to develop functional solutions while mentoring and supporting field technicians and project teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that standardize and streamline fire alarm programming methodologies and workflows.
  • Support technical training initiatives that improve installation quality, commissioning effectiveness, and field team performance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex fire alarm systems projects, traveling periodically to project sites nationwide to provide advanced technical support, assist with critical system startups and commissioning activities, troubleshoot escalated issues, and collaborate directly with field teams during key project milestones to ensure successful project delivery.

Here's What We're Looking For

  • 5-8+ years of experience in the fire alarm industry, including hands-on field experience in installation, startup, commissioning, programming, or service.
  • Extensive knowledge of fire alarm systems and life safety applications, including high-rise buildings, smoke control systems, networked fire alarm systems, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise in fire alarm programming, system configuration, troubleshooting, and functional testing.
  • Experience programming and commissioning Autocall (preferred), Simplex or Gamewell FCI.
  • Strong understanding of integrated building systems, including the interaction of fire alarm systems with smoke control, mass notification, HVAC, security, and other related systems.
  • Ability to analyze complex system requirements, develop functional programming solutions, and support projects throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to support and mentor field technicians, project teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites nationwide to support critical startups, commissioning activities, and complex troubleshooting efforts.
  • Relocation assistance is available based on candidate qualifications.
