Job description

Principal Engineer

Location: Toronto/GTA preferred; Ottawa considered
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent
Work Model: Remote within Canada

Build the Future of Global Payments

Veem is transforming how businesses move money around the world. Through modern payment infrastructure, intelligent automation, AI-powered operations, and emerging technologies such as stablecoins and blockchain, we are building faster, simpler, and more scalable global B2B payment experiences.

We are looking for a transformative Principal Engineer to help define the next generation of Veem’s technical architecture and platform strategy.

This is one of the most senior individual-contributor engineering roles at Veem. You will partner closely with executive leadership and teams across Engineering, Product, Data, Security, Compliance, and Operations to lead mission-critical initiatives across payments infrastructure, AI-enabled systems, distributed architecture, and emerging financial technologies.

This is not a maintenance-oriented role. We are looking for a hands-on technical leader who can shape strategy, influence across the organization, mentor senior engineers, and drive meaningful technical transformation.

What You’ll Do
  • Define and drive Veem’s long-term technical architecture across core payments, platform, data, integration, and operational systems.

  • Design scalable, resilient, secure, and highly available distributed systems for global B2B payments.

  • Lead complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives spanning multiple teams and systems.

  • Drive modernization efforts, improve platform scalability, and reduce technical debt.

  • Establish engineering standards for architecture, reliability, observability, security, testing, and operational excellence.

  • Lead AI transformation initiatives across engineering and operations.

  • Design and implement systems using AI agents, LLM workflows, intelligent automation, and AI-assisted developer tooling.

  • Help shape Veem’s strategy around stablecoins, blockchain, digital assets, and modern payment rails.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies, settlement mechanisms, fintech protocols, and platform investments.

  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders while raising the engineering bar across the organization.

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to executive and engineering leadership.

  • Translate business priorities into scalable, practical, and commercially valuable technical solutions.

What We’re Looking For
  • Approximately 12–18 years of software engineering experience.

  • Proven experience operating at Staff+, Senior Staff, Principal Engineer, Architect, or equivalent level.

  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, backend architecture, APIs, microservices, cloud infrastructure, and event-driven systems.

  • Strong hands-on software engineering and architecture capabilities.

  • Experience leading technically complex initiatives across multiple teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical strategy without direct authority.

  • Experience in fintech, payments, financial services, or another high-scale, highly regulated technology environment.

  • Strong understanding of scalability, data consistency, reliability, security, fault tolerance, and production operations.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical trade-offs to executive and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, ambiguous, and entrepreneurial environment.

Preferred Experience
  • B2B or cross-border payments.

  • Payment processing, settlement, reconciliation, ledgering, treasury, foreign exchange, or financial APIs.

  • AI agents, LLM integrations, intelligent automation, machine learning platforms, or AI-enabled products.

  • Stablecoins, blockchain infrastructure, digital wallets, crypto payments, or digital assets.

  • Experience at a modern fintech, payments, technology, or AI-native organization.

Technical Environment
  • AWS, GCP, or Azure

  • Distributed and event-driven architectures

  • Modern backend platforms, APIs, and microservices

  • Messaging, streaming, and data systems

  • AI/LLM tooling and agent orchestration frameworks

  • Blockchain, stablecoin, and payment infrastructure

  • Observability, reliability, security, and platform tooling

Why Join Veem?Shape the Future of Global Payments

Lead High-Impact Technical Transformation

This role provides the scope and influence to drive meaningful change across architecture, engineering practices, platform capabilities, and organizational strategy.

Work on AI, Stablecoins, and Emerging Financial Technology

You will have the opportunity to move beyond theoretical experimentation and help determine how these technologies can be used in real-world financial systems.

Operate With Executive Visibility

You will partner directly with senior leadership and contribute to decisions that shape Veem’s long-term product and technology direction.

Maintain Hands-On Technical Impact

This is a senior leadership role for someone who still wants to engage deeply in architecture, systems, and technical problem-solving.

Join an Entrepreneurial Environment

Veem offers the opportunity to move quickly, challenge assumptions, introduce new ideas, and make a visible impact.

Build Systems That Matter

The systems you help design will support real businesses moving real money across borders. Reliability, speed, trust, and technical quality directly affect our customers.

  • Build a deep understanding of Veem’s platform, architecture, customers, payment flows, and business strategy.
  • Establish strong relationships with Engineering, Product, Security, Compliance, Data, Operations, and executive leadership.
  • Identify the most important architectural risks, constraints, and opportunities across the platform.
  • Create clear technical direction for several of Veem’s highest-priority initiatives.
  • Lead or materially influence major platform, AI, payment, or modernization programs.
  • Improve the quality and consistency of architecture and technical decision-making across teams.
  • Introduce practical AI capabilities that improve engineering productivity or operational performance.
  • Help define Veem’s technical approach to stablecoins and emerging payment infrastructure.
  • Mentor senior engineers and help strengthen technical leadership across the organization.
  • Deliver measurable improvements in scalability, reliability, developer productivity, or platform capability.
  • Establish yourself as a trusted technical advisor who can bring clarity to Veem’s most complex engineering challenges.
Join Veem

Veem is entering an important stage of its technical evolution.

The future of global payments will be shaped by intelligent automation, real-time infrastructure, new settlement technologies, stronger platform capabilities, and engineering teams that can turn emerging technology into trusted financial products.

As Principal Engineer, you will have the opportunity to help build that future.

You will influence how Veem’s systems are designed, how our engineering organization operates, and how we use AI, stablecoins, blockchain, and modern cloud technologies to create a stronger global payments platform.

If you are a deeply technical, forward-thinking engineering leader who wants to make a company-wide impact, we would love to hear from you.
