What is a Remote Financial Data Analyst?

A Remote Financial Data Analyst is a professional who works from a location outside of a traditional office, analyzing and interpreting financial data to help organizations make informed decisions. They use various tools and software to collect, process, and present data related to budgets, investments, and financial trends. Their insights support business planning, risk management, and strategic growth. Remote Financial Data Analysts often collaborate with teams through virtual meetings and digital platforms, allowing them to work flexibly from anywhere with an internet connection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Financial Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Financial Data Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in finance and statistics, and a relevant degree such as finance, economics, or mathematics. Expertise in tools like Excel, SQL, Python, and familiarity with business intelligence platforms such as Tableau or Power BI, plus relevant certifications (e.g., CFA or FMVA), are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are vital soft skills for collaborating virtually and delivering insights independently. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, effective remote teamwork, and actionable financial recommendations for business success.

How does a Remote Financial Data Analyst typically collaborate with team members and stakeholders across different locations?

As a Remote Financial Data Analyst, collaboration is often facilitated through digital communication tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and shared dashboards. You’ll regularly participate in virtual meetings to discuss data findings with finance teams, business leaders, and other analysts. Clear documentation and frequent updates are key, as is the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders. Building strong remote relationships and proactively communicating progress help ensure projects stay aligned and deadlines are met, even when working from different time zones.

Job description

Job Title: Finance Business Analyst (Insurance)

Industry: Insurance (Property & Casualty, Life, Health, Specialty)

Workplace Type: 100% Remote

Duration: 12-Month Contract

Experience Level: Senior / Expert

Project Overview

We are seeking a Senior-level IT Business Analyst to support critical finance initiatives within a large, well-established insurance organization. This role is deeply embedded within Finance and focuses on enhancing financial reporting, close processes, and control frameworks.

This is not a general IT Business Analyst role—success in this position requires hands-on experience supporting Finance teams at an insurance carrier, with the ability to translate complex accounting requirements into actionable IT deliverables.

The primary focus of this engagement is stabilizing current general ledger and financial systems to enable future transformation initiatives across data, reporting, and ERP platforms. You will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, auditability, and operational efficiency in a highly regulated environment.

Key Initiatives & Impact
  • Stabilize and optimize existing finance and general ledger systems to support accurate financial reporting
  • Strengthen financial close, reconciliation, and reporting processes (GAAP and Statutory)
  • Improve financial data integrity, lineage, and audit readiness
  • Support control-driven initiatives tied to regulatory and audit requirements
  • Enable future finance transformation efforts by addressing current system limitations
  • Enhance reporting workflows and data pipelines across upstream and downstream systems
Core Responsibilities
  • Elicit, document, and validate requirements related to:
    • Financial close and reconciliation processes
    • Statutory (STAT) and GAAP reporting
    • Intercompany, reinsurance, and allocation workflows
    • Finance controls, audit support, and data lineage
  • Translate finance requirements into:
    • User stories with clear, testable acceptance criteria
    • Functional specifications for data, reporting, and system integrations
    • Test scenarios supporting UAT and control validation
  • Partner closely with finance stakeholders (Controllers, Accounting, Financial Reporting) to:
    • Analyze system impacts across upstream and downstream processes
    • Identify data gaps, logic issues, and control risks
    • Support resolution of production issues impacting financial results
  • Collaborate with development, QA, and data teams to deliver solutions that meet stringent financial accuracy and audit standards
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5+ years of Business Analyst experience supporting Finance or Accounting teams
  • Direct experience working at an insurance carrier (P&C, Life, Health, or Specialty)
  • Hands-on experience supporting insurance financial reporting, including:
    • Statutory (STAT) and/or GAAP reporting
    • Financial close and reconciliation processes
    • Intercompany or reinsurance accounting workflows
  • Proven ability to partner directly with:
    • Controllers
    • Financial Reporting teams
    • Accounting Policy and/or Audit teams
  • Demonstrated experience translating accounting-driven requirements into IT deliverables (beyond process mapping)
Technical & Functional Skills
  • Strong business analysis and requirements gathering expertise
  • Experience writing finance-driven user stories in Agile or hybrid environments
  • SQL proficiency for data validation, reconciliation, and analysis
  • Exposure to financial data warehouses and reporting layers
  • Familiarity with ERP systems, general ledger feeds, and financial reporting platforms
  • Experience supporting UAT and managing requirements through finance-driven timelines
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting regulatory or audit-driven initiatives
  • Background in finance transformation or reporting modernization programs
  • Familiarity with environments where financial accuracy and controls take priority over speed
  • Experience working with complex financial systems such as IAS/SunGard or similar platforms
Work Environment
  • Agile or hybrid delivery model
  • Highly collaborative environment with Finance, IT, and Data teams
  • Strong emphasis on accuracy, auditability, and control governance
  • Opportunity to contribute to long-term modernization initiatives after stabilization phase
  • Cannot support Visa sponsorship or OPT/CPT assistance for this role.
