A Remote Financial Controller is a finance professional who oversees the accounting operations and financial reporting of an organization while working from a remote location. They are responsible for managing budgets, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, preparing financial statements, and providing strategic financial guidance to management. By working remotely, they use digital tools and cloud-based systems to collaborate with teams, monitor financial activities, and ensure accurate record-keeping. This role is essential for maintaining financial health and supporting decision-making within an organization, even when not physically present in the office.

What does a remote financial controller do?

As a remote financial controller, you work from home to help manage the accounting and funding needs of your employer. Your duties include helping to forecast budget needs, prepare a statement on current funds and expected returns from ongoing projects, and prepare reports to submit to any relevant entities, such as executives within the company or government agencies that require paperwork before awarding contracts. You often work through email, video conferencing, and similar virtual communication channels to gather information for these reports. Companies also advertise this job under titles like corporate controller, so be sure to read each job description carefully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote financial controller, and why are they important?

Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software such as SAP or QuickBooks, advanced Excel skills, and experience with cloud-based financial tools are essential. Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart. • Identify inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and gaps in AI-generated content and propose specific improvements.
  • Evaluate AI reasoning and logic in financial and accounting contexts and highlight errors or weaknesses in analysis.
  • Collaborate with project teams to refine guidelines and standards for evaluating and improving AI responses.
  • Work independently to manage workload, maintain high quality standards, and meet project timelines over the full engagement period.
  • Use AI and large language model tools at a user level to test, review, and iterate on accounting and finance outputs.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • background in public accounting, corporate accounting, audit, tax, advisory, FP&A, financial reporting, or finance operations.
  • Expertise in financial reporting and controllership.
  • Strong technical accounting skills, including experience with revenue recognition and lease accounting.
  • Experience with internal controls and SOX compliance.
  • Exposure to treasury activities and month-end close processes.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex accounting concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively in a fully remote environment.
  • General familiarity with AI and large language model (LLM) tools at a user level.
  • Availability to work 30–40 hours per week across the full 12-week engagement.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • CPA certification preferred but not required; practical expertise is highly valued.
  • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or a related discipline is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Experience developing or reviewing complex accounting and finance business cases.
  • Comfort working in a consulting-style engagement with a focus on deliverables and outcomes.
  • Interest in emerging technologies and how AI can support corporate finance, FP&A, investment analysis, and business decision-making.
  • Motivation to contribute to the accuracy, reliability, and practical value of AI tools used by accounting and finance professionals worldwide.
