Job Description
The City of Raleigh is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Transportation department.

About Us:
The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development/utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintains over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets.
This role is required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather.
Duties and Responsibilities
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Operates dump truck to haul crews, supplies and equipment to job sites
  • Operates dump truck with leaf machine attachment during leaf collection season
  • Assists with concrete repairs including setup and finishing
  • Uses snow removal equipment to operate the dump truck during inclement weather
  • Works extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 1 to 3 years' experience in medium to heavy construction equipment operation or related work
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Very Heavy: Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of forcefrequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, construction site, or in a vehicle. Employees may occasionally work in confined spaces, warehouse environment, or shop environment.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and loud noises. Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, communicable diseases, and toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.
