Job description

Employment Type: Independent Contractor (1099)

Timeline: Estimated 3-6 months with possible extension or 2-4 months if able to work 40 hours per week

Project Overview:

We are in the final stages of a company-wide Product Data Cleanup & Standardization. This initiative supports product lifecycle, EDI integration, and product taxonomy roadmap. This effort has transformed from a basic SKU cross-reference into a structured rebuild of product taxonomy across hundreds of fastener categories. The incoming contractor will support the completion of this project and ensure continuity, accuracy, and completion of the standardized data framework.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Product Data Standardization & Completion

Continue cleanup and standardization of product data across all remaining categories while ensuring consistency across similar SKUs and product families. Validate and normalize key attributes, such as: Product Name, Dimensions & Size Callouts, Strength / Grade, Type, Material, Finish / Coating, Thread pitch, etc.

2. Description Rebuild & Taxonomy Alignment

Rewrite and standardize product descriptions using defined naming conventions. Ensure descriptions are to engineering specifications, structured, searchable, EDI-compatible. Align descriptions and attributes across systems (ERP, PIM, customer requirements)

3. Data Governance & Process Development

  • Help finalize a scalable data entry framework for future product setup
  • Document standards, rules, and best practices for internal teams
  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and risks in current data structure

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Marketing, Sales, and IT teams to validate product data
  • Translate technical product specs into usable commercial data
  • Support EDI readiness requirements tied to customer expectations

5. Quality Control & Audit

  • Perform data audits to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Flag discrepancies and recommend corrective actions
  • Maintain high standards of data integrity across all categories

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years fastener industry experience (critical – not optional)
  • Deep knowledge of:
    • Fastener types, applications, and standards (SAE, ASTM, ISO)
    • Threading, materials, coatings, and strength grades
  • Proven experience with:
    • Product data management, ERP systems, or PIM systems
    • SKU structuring and attribute standardization
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership mid-project

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience supporting EDI implementations
  • Background in application engineering or technical product support
  • Experience building or enforcing data governance standards
  • Familiarity with industrial distribution or B2B supply chains

Deliverables / Success Metrics

  • Completion of standardized product data across all assigned categories
  • Consistent, structured product descriptions across entire catalog
  • Documented data standards and governance framework
  • Zero critical data gaps impacting EDI readiness

Work Structure

  • Remote or hybrid (as applicable)
  • Flexible hours with defined weekly progress milestones
  • Regular check-ins with project stakeholders
