Job description

Openings are available across the MSP, within Expansion, P&C, within Compression, and ILI Mod, within Pipeline groups.

The manager, engineering projects leads team members in the planning, designing, procurement and construction of additions, changes, or maintenance to Northern Natural Gas Company's 15,000-mile natural gas pipeline system. Responsibilities include project oversight; guiding project management and construction staff; resolving complex project problems; and personnel development. The manager, engineering projects participates in the management of work for all levels of project managers, construction coordinators, financial analysts and third-party contractors. The position is responsible for all work products provided by its team and may also provide assistance to engineering management on high-level projects and initiatives. This position generally reports to a director-engineering services or the vice president of engineering and provides leadership to a subset of or its own delivery team.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field, or equivalent experience. (Typically four years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.) 
  • Eight or more years of technical experience in the natural gas or energy industry as a practicing engineer and/or project manager, including highly technical work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.

  • Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple issues and projects concurrently. 
  • Working knowledge of accounting, financial and contract applications.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to remote locations.
  • Understanding safety, environmental compliance, and risk management in hazardous environments.
  • Project lifecycle management from concept through design, permitting, construction and commissioning.
  • Advanced leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to leverage the strengths of others to deliver success on complex, high-level projects.
  • Advanced technical knowledge, judgment and capability in pipeline engineering.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and manage multiple issues and projects at the same time.

Project and Contract Execution

  • Provide project leadership and oversight for planning, contracting, cost forecasting, and construction of project additions and maintenance across Northern Natural Gas Company's pipeline system using the plan, execute, measure, and correct model.
  • Own project and business outcomes for assigned capital projects
  • Manage assigned third-party capital construction contracts, and identify, manage, and mitigate project and contract risks to reduce company exposure and support successful execution.
  • Work closely with engineering managers and design supervisors on scope, design integration, technical assurance and handoff from engineering to construction/execution.

Strategic Improvement and Functional Leadership

  • Develop and execute strategic and technical goals and implementation plans that strengthen project management capabilities and improve departmental and organizational performance. 
  • Identify performance gaps and implement initiatives that drive continuous improvement.
  • Contribute as a member of the delivery management team to achieve company objectives and provide functional leadership to project managers, construction coordinators and analysts.

Compliance, Innovation, and Emergency Response

  • Ensure projects and designs comply with applicable industry codes, standards, and Company Standards and Operating Procedures.
  • Stay current on industry issues and technical trends and recommend and implement improvements that benefit Northern's business.
  • Support emergency management response teams in managing and resolving operational crises.
