What is remote equine assisted therapy?

Remote equine assisted therapy is a form of mental health support where therapeutic activities involving horses are facilitated online, rather than in person. Clients and therapists connect virtually to discuss and reflect on video footage, live streams, or exercises related to horse behavior and care. While direct physical interaction with horses does not occur remotely, clients can still benefit from learning about equine behavior, mindfulness, and metaphorical lessons drawn from working with horses. This approach makes equine therapy more accessible to people who cannot visit a stable or therapy center.

What skills and qualifications are needed for remote equine assisted therapy?

To thrive as a Remote Equine Assisted Therapy Practitioner, you generally need a background in counseling, psychology, or social work, along with specialized training or certification in equine-assisted therapy. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and online client management systems is essential for delivering remote sessions. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and adaptability help practitioners build trust and effectively support clients in a virtual environment. These skills and qualifications are crucial for providing ethical, safe, and impactful therapeutic experiences while overcoming the unique challenges of remote delivery.

What are the unique challenges of providing remote equine assisted therapy, and how are they addressed?

Providing equine assisted therapy remotely introduces challenges such as ensuring client safety around horses without direct supervision, maintaining strong therapeutic engagement through a virtual format, and adapting activities for remote participation. Practitioners often collaborate with on-site assistants or caregivers to supervise and support clients during sessions. They also modify exercises to prioritize safety and use creative digital tools to foster connection and engagement. Clear communication and thorough pre-session planning are crucial for successful remote delivery.
