Role description:

Arcadis Professional Services (Canada) Inc. (Arcadis) is currently seeking to hire an Intermediate Environmental Scientist to join our Resilience Team. This is a full-time position based in Ontario. The successful candidate will co-ordinate and execute activities assigned by Project Managers pertaining to the design, coordination and implementation of environmental projects including environmental site assessments, groundwater monitoring and sampling programs, and remediation projects. 

This position will be primarily office-based role however some field work and travel should be expected. This may include conducting site visits and inspections, monitoring and supervising drilling activities, preparing field notes, collecting soil and groundwater samples and reporting. Other responsibilities include maintaining knowledge and familiarity with provincial regulatory frameworks, diligent interpretation of environmental data, evaluation of sample results, report writing and participation in various marketing activities (assisting in proposal preparation, obtaining quotations etc.). 

The candidate would be expected to aid in creating proposals for new work, working in a team environment to ensure proper project management/ operations and in leading smaller project work. Arcadis has a strong collaborative culture so this will be an opportunity for you to use, learn, and apply foundational skills in the environmental field.

Role accountabilities:

  • Full understanding of O.Reg. 153/04 and O.Reg. 406/19
  • Knowledge/experience in environmental sampling
  • Assisting Project Managers on larger projects and in running smaller projects independently
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors in an industrial or construction setting.
  • Ability to apply standard engineering/scientific subject matter to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a range of desktop applications, with an emphasis on a strong skill set in Microsoft Excel
  • Interest and commitment to expand digital skill set to adapt to evolving industry practices.
  • Knowledge/experience in the areas of data science, data management, and/or geographic information systems (GIS)

The successful candidate will coordinate and manage environmental site assessment projects including Phase I/One ESAs, Phase II/Two ESAs, risk assessments, and remediation projects. They will maintain knowledge and familiarity with provincial and federal regulatory frameworks, diligent interpretation of environmental data, the comparison of sample results to applicable standards/guidelines and data QA/QC.  They will prepare detailed and accurate Phase I/One and II/Two ESA reports for senior review, and prepare documents relating to the completion of a Record of Site Condition in Ontario.

Project and team management responsibilities will include preparing proposals, budgets and schedules, participating in business development activities to secure work, managing scope and project tasks, including accountability for project financial results. The successful candidate will be responsible for communicating with clients and internal stakeholders and providing technical direction and mentoring of junior staff. The ability to lead and motivate the members of the team and bringing experience from establishing and maintaining client relationships are key components of the role.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strong attention to detail and accuracy, coupled with excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills. Effective time management and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are essential. A valid driver's license is required, with compensation provided for work-related travel. A commitment to health and safety excellence is crucial, along with the ability to work independently in field settings for extended periods, including in remote areas.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Completed degree in Engineering, Geoscience, Environmental Sciences
  • Current or pending P.Eng. or P.Geo designation in Ontario and eligibility in other provinces preferred
  • 4 to 8 years' experience
  • Experience with the Federal framework considered an asset
