Duties/Responsibilities
  • Independently prepares and delivers stormwater pollution prevention training to city departments.
  • Prepares stormwater pollution prevention educational materials for local businesses, including automotive businesses and restaurants.
  • Edits technical reports and memoranda prepared by other professionals for consistent language.
  • Attends Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) meetings regularly and shares meeting notes. Presents information to the EAB.
  • Facilitates stakeholder workgroups to gather perspective and desires about stormwater and city stormwater programs.
  • Curates stormwater permit-related information on the city website, including permit-required documents and the State of Our Streams annual report of stream water quality.
  • Prepares social media posts (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) to educate residents about stormwater pollution, projects, issues, stream and lake water quality, and other issues.
  • Collects and summarizes program information for the permit-required annual report.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental education, environmental management, natural resource management, biology, communications or related field.
  • Two years of experience in communications strategy design and implementation, science communication, or environmental education.
  • When assigned to Water Quality, a valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Additional Preferred Skills
  • Experience preparing materials for use in training or teaching scientific information such as written materials, graphics, and video.
  • Experience conducting environmental education programs or other environmental training.
  • Intermittent/Perennial Stream Identification and 8 or 24-hour OSHA HAZWOPER.
