Managing Technical Consultant, Environmental Scientist

Lead High-Impact Environmental Programs That Help Shape Sustainable Development Across Canada

ERM is seeking a Managing Technical Consultant, Environmental Scientist to join our office in Yellowknife, NT. This is an opportunity for an experienced environmental scientist with a strong background in aquatic sciences/fisheries or biodiversity to provide technical leadership on complex projects, mentor multidisciplinary teams, and deliver strategic environmental solutions for clients across Canada. Working alongside toxicologists, geochemists, hydrologists, fisheries biologists, wildlife biologists, and other environmental specialists, you will help guide scientific studies that inform critical environmental decisions, support regulatory processes, and contribute to responsible resource development.

As a senior member of the team, you will play a pivotal role in managing environmental programs from planning through execution, ensuring technical excellence, client satisfaction, and the delivery of high-quality scientific outcomes.

What You'll Bring:

Required

  • BSc in Aquatic Biology, Marine Biology or similar discipline.

  • 4+ years of experience organizing, managing, and executing field programs, including boating experience and working in remote locations.

  • Strong data management, analysis, and presentation skills.

  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health & Safety protocols.

  • Expertise with Federal, Provincial, and Territorial regulations and guidelines.

  • Excellent writing, communication, and time management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and manage competing priorities.

  • Enjoys working collaboratively and positively within a team setting as well as working independently.

  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Ability to travel and work in remote locations in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.

  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred

  • Graduate degree in Aquatic Biology, Marine Biology or similar discipline.

  • Experience with aquatic studies involving water quality, sediment quality, fish and biotic communities, including benthic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, periphyton, and phytoplankton.

  • Experience using the open-source program R or similar.

  • Marine experience.

  • CABIN certified.

  • Boat operating experience.

  • Prior experience in environmental consulting, government, and/or the mining sector, preferably in northern Canada.

  • Experience leading environmental monitoring programs, permitting initiatives, and impact assessments.

  • Experience mentoring junior scientists and field staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee freshwater and/or marine field programs from planning through execution.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams and provide technical guidance.

  • Manage project deliverables, schedules, budgets, and quality expectations.

  • Compile, manage, review, and analyze water quality, sediment quality, and biological datasets.

  • Interpret scientific findings and develop practical recommendations for clients and stakeholders.

  • Prepare, review, and deliver technical reports, including environmental monitoring reports, environmental permitting documentation, and impact assessments.

  • Support data management and quality assurance processes.

  • Collaborate with toxicologists, geochemists, hydrologists, fisheries biologists, wildlife biologists, and other specialists to develop integrated environmental solutions.

  • Maintain strict adherence to health and safety requirements and promote a culture of safety excellence, including participating in Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

  • Support client relationships and contribute to business development activities through technical expertise and exceptional service.

  • Travel to project sites and remote locations as required.

  • Support multi-disciplinary field teams that are deploying from Yellowknife to project sites.

  • Support Area Manager in office management.

For the Managing Technical Consultant, Environmental Scientist position, the anticipated annual base pay is $95,600-$120,000 (CAD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
