What is remote environmental engineering?

A Remote Environmental Engineering job involves designing, assessing, and implementing environmental solutions while working from a remote location. Engineers in this role focus on sustainability, pollution control, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance using digital tools and remote collaboration platforms. Common tasks include data analysis, modeling, and report writing, often in industries like energy, water resources, and waste management. Remote work allows professionals to contribute to environmental projects without being physically present at job sites.

What does a remote environmental engineer do?

In a remote environmental engineering role, you can expect to spend your days conducting data analysis, preparing technical reports, and developing environmental assessment or remediation plans using digital tools. Collaboration with team members, clients, and regulatory agencies often happens through video calls, emails, and project management platforms. You may also be responsible for modeling environmental impacts, reviewing regulatory compliance documents, and advising on sustainable design practices. While fieldwork may occasionally be required, most work is completed independently from your remote location. This structure allows for flexibility while maintaining a high level of technical and collaborative output.

What skills and qualifications are needed for remote environmental engineering?

To thrive as a Remote Environmental Engineer, you need a solid foundation in environmental science and engineering principles, typically with a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as GIS software, modeling applications (like AutoCAD or MATLAB), and regulatory frameworks (such as EPA standards) is often required, along with relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills are important, especially for collaborating with distributed teams and stakeholders virtually. These skills ensure effective analysis, compliance, and the successful execution of projects while working remotely.

Can remote environmental engineers work remotely?

Remote environmental engineers can work remotely, especially for tasks such as data analysis, report writing, and project planning that do not require on-site presence. However, some roles may require fieldwork, site inspections, or laboratory work, which necessitate physical presence. The feasibility depends on the specific job responsibilities and employer policies.

Is there a demand for remote environmental engineers?

Remote environmental engineering is in increasing demand as companies seek sustainable solutions and regulatory compliance. Professionals with skills in environmental assessment, data analysis, and environmental management tools are especially sought after, with many roles offering flexible or remote work options due to the nature of the field.

Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can continue to solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Project Air Quality Engineer to join our Integrated Sustainability and Compliance (ISC) team, in a Texas office such as Austin, Dallas, or Houston. This will be a hybrid role, splitting time between an Arcadis office, remote work and visits to client sites.

ISC is an area of our business that is growing rapidly and is a priority in our global strategy and an area of heightened focus and investment in our current strategy cycle. ISC services include Air Quality Permitting and Compliance, Environmental Due Diligence, Environmental Compliance and Assurance, Safety Compliance and Assurance, Digital EHS&S, Industrial Hygiene, Sustainability and Product Stewardship.

In this role you will work directly with the North American Air Quality and Noise Community of Practice Leaders to support our expanding Gulf Coast air quality practice. You will be a key technical resource on Gulf Coast based air quality projects such as air permitting and compliance support, regulatory applicability and strategy development, emissions inventory development and reporting, engine and ozone depleting substances compliance, greenhouse gas emissions and sustainability reporting and/or air dispersion modeling.

As a Consultant with Arcadis, you'll soon discover you can make a difference in our company by collaborating with staff and contributing to an interesting array of projects. You will be a key member to drive innovation and build strong technical communities within the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Space. This is a great opportunity to work with a dynamic team and gain experience in a wide variety of environmental projects for diverse market sectors, including Oil and Gas. Your career growth will only be limited by your skills and your passion for success! You will also contribute as a mentor to existing staff to support their growth and help grow Air Quality Services with our key clients.

Role accountabilities:

This role includes performing a wide variety of air quality services for clients in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, chemical, transportation, and oil and gas.  While your project focus will be air quality, you will have the opportunity to participate in other environmental compliance projects such as compliance auditing, waste management, stormwater permitting and SPCC plans.

  • Apply your knowledge of Federal and State (with a focus on Texas and other Gulf Coast states) air quality regulations to air permitting and compliance projects.
  • Assist clients, including upstream and midstream facilities, with permitting and routine air quality compliance reporting such as compliance certifications, emissions tracking, deviation reports, and MACT reports.
  • Prepare air permit applications such as Permits-by-Rule, minor NSR, FESOP, Title V, PSD (and PSD avoidance), and Non-Attainment NSR (and NNSR Avoidance).
  • Collaborate with Arcadis' air team leaders to ensure application of regulatory knowledge, analytical techniques, and excellent project delivery.
  • Perform emissions calculations for regulated air pollutants and greenhouse gases to be included in reporting such as emission inventories, Toxics Release Inventories and Tier II.
  • Support client and proposal development activities.

In this role you must be willing to travel up to 10-20% for project and client needs which may include single overnight trips. Most work can be performed from an Arcadis office location or remotely.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in Air Quality, with a strong background in Oil and Gas air emission calculations and permitting
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or related engineering field

Preferred:

  • Masters degree in the fields listed above
  • EIT or PE registration in Texas and/or Louisiana

Continue your career journey as an Arcadian.
