What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Environmental Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Environmental Consultant, you need a solid background in environmental science or related fields, strong analytical abilities, and relevant qualifications such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Familiarity with GIS software, environmental impact assessment tools, and regulatory compliance systems is highly valuable. Excellent written communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and client management. These skills ensure accurate assessments, effective remote teamwork, and compliance with environmental regulations in a virtual consulting environment.

What is remote environmental consulting?

Remote environmental consulting involves providing expert advice and services related to environmental issues—such as compliance, assessments, and sustainability—using digital tools without being physically present on-site. Consultants may analyze data, review documents, conduct virtual meetings, and use remote sensing technologies to assess environmental impacts or compliance. This approach allows organizations to access specialized expertise regardless of their location, often reducing costs and increasing flexibility.

How do remote environmental consultants effectively collaborate with on-site teams and clients?

Remote environmental consultants typically use a combination of digital collaboration tools, regular video conferences, and detailed reporting to stay closely connected with on-site teams and clients. They often participate in project planning meetings, review field data remotely, and provide guidance or recommendations based on findings. Clear communication and proactive follow-up are essential for addressing any challenges that arise due to the lack of physical presence, ensuring that project goals are met efficiently.

This role offers the opportunity to help shape Apex's environmental strategy in the South Atlantic by driving organic growth, deepening key client relationships, and leveraging Apex's national technical capabilities. The Practice Leader will collaborate closely with Division leadership, National Account Managers, and technical teams while maintaining a strong personal presence in the market.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will operate entrepreneurially while being supported by Apex's established platform, leadership team, and national resources.

Your Responsibilities as a Environmental Market Leader:

  • Drive growth of Apex's environmental consulting services across the South Atlantic, with accountability for pipeline development, opportunity creation, and revenue generation; looking for a focus on site characterization, investigation, and remediation for industrial/commercial and municipal clients.
  • Serve as a client-facing leader and trusted advisor, maintaining active engagement with key industrial, commercial, and municipal clients to both long-term partners and new business opportunities.
  • Identify, shape, and pursue new opportunities by leveraging your professional network and collaborating with Apex's National Account Managers, Regional Commercial Leaders, Service Line Leaders, and local technical teams.
  • Lead and influence pursuit strategy, go/no‑go decisions, proposal development, and contract negotiations for strategic opportunities.
  • Provide technical and strategic leadership on select environmental engagements, ensuring quality execution while maintaining a primary focus on client satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Work closely with National Account Managers and Commercial Line Leaders to build and execute on account plans and develop opportunities across the Division.
  • Direct high-visibility projects, ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and successful environmental outcomes.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively on key technical concepts to regulators, stakeholders, and teaming partners.
  • Manage program and project performance with a focus on quality, innovation, and client satisfaction.
  • Travel to client locations as needed for meetings and business development.

What we're looking for:

Industry Experience

  • 12+ years of experience in environmental consulting or industry with progressive responsibility in client-facing, seller-doer roles.
  • Professional registration as a PE or PG in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia or Florida desired.
  • Proven success in client engagement, building opportunities through existing relationships, and managing complex environmental programs.
  • Deep technical expertise with site characterization, investigation, remediation, and regulatory strategy.
  • Strong communication skills — both technical and strategic — with a proven ability to gain credibility with regulators, stakeholders, and clients.
  • A passion for mentoring, leadership, and advancing a culture of excellence and safety.
  • Established professional network within the South Atlantic market.

Sales and Growth Experience

  • Demonstrated success growing client accounts and developing new business in a consulting environment.
  • Track record of identifying opportunities, shaping pursuits, and converting relationships into revenue.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to align technical solutions to client business needs.
  • Commitment to a growth mindset and long‑term client relationship development

Leadership Attributes

  • Confident, collaborative leader with strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to operate independently while thriving in a team-based, cross-functional environment.
  • Passion for mentoring and developing high performing technical and seller-doer teams.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast paced, PE backed environment focused on performance and growth.

Why you'll love working for us:

  • Company-paid life, short, and long-term disability.
  • 401k match, tuition assistance, and more.
  • Cross-training and the ability to work on a variety of projects.
  • Performance-based bonuses or other incentives.
  • Working with the best and brightest in the industry.
  • 2,000+ employee national firm with 70+ locations across the US.
