Take your substation engineering career to the highest level with a confidential industry leader that shapes the energy infrastructure landscape. This Senior Substation Project Engineering Manager position puts you at the center of complex, large-scale substation projects, with the opportunity to be based in Bloomington, Minnesota, or at one of many other office locations across the United States. It is a direct-hire, full-time role designed for a technical authority who wants to own project delivery from start to finish.

In this role, you will serve as the technical anchor for every project phaseโ€”initial design, engineering, procurement, and commissioning. You will direct multidisciplinary teams, oversee quality, and manage technical deliverables for major utility clients. Working side by side with the Project Manager, you will balance scope, schedule, and budget while keeping client engagement and risk management at the forefront. Your decisions will directly impact the reliability of power delivery systems that serve millions of people.

We are looking for a seasoned professional with at least eleven years of substation engineering and project management experience, backed by an engineering degree from an accredited program. You have successfully delivered complex EPC projects and know how to navigate the intricacies of client expectations, regulatory requirements, and field realities. Your leadership style is collaborative and decisive, and you communicate with clarity at every levelโ€”from the design team to the C-suite. You are ready to mentor emerging engineers and shape the next generation of technical talent.

This opportunity comes with a compensation package ranging from $142,000 to $271,000 annually plus bonus, full relocation support, and a hybrid work model that respects your work-life balance. You will be part of a firm that invests in your professional growth and provides the resources to do groundbreaking work. If you are ready to step into a role where your expertise will be celebrated and your leadership will drive change, apply today and letโ€™s talk about your future.

Non-Negotiables
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline is required
  • You must possess at least 11 years of progressive experience in substation engineering and project management
  • Demonstrated success delivering complex substation design projects and managing EPC programs is essential
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship
  • The ability to work from Bloomington, MN, or one of the other listed office locations is mandatory
  • Strong leadership and client-facing communication skills are non-negotiable; you will represent the firm to major utility clients
  • Proficiency with project controlsโ€”scope, schedule, budget, and riskโ€”for multidisciplinary engineering teams is required
What's In It For You
  • The annual salary ranges from $142,000 to $271,000, depending on experience and location, with a performance bonus on top
  • Full relocation assistance is provided to help you settle into your chosen office location
  • You will lead technically challenging substation projects for major utility clients, adding high-impact work to your portfolio
  • Join a well-established engineering firm known for its commitment to innovation, safety, and employee development
  • Enjoy a hybrid remote work arrangement that balances office collaboration with flexible remote days
  • Clear paths for career progression into senior project management and technical leadership roles are available
  • Receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical lead and project delivery owner for complex substation design projects from concept to completion
  • Manage all technical deliverables and ensure they meet client specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee project resourcesโ€”including engineers, designers, and external partnersโ€”to maintain quality and schedule adherence
  • Collaborate closely with the assigned Project Manager to control scope, schedule, and budget while proactively identifying and mitigating risks
  • Engage with clients regularly to provide progress updates, address concerns, and strengthen long-term relationships
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of safety, technical excellence, and continuous improvement
  • Drive the development and adoption of engineering standards and best practices across projects
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly valued and will set you apart from other candidates
  • A masterโ€™s degree in engineering, business administration, or a related field is a strong plus
  • Previous experience working directly with electric utility clients is preferred
  • A track record of managing multiple concurrent projects and adapting to changing priorities
  • Familiarity with industry software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or scheduling tools
  • Bilingual communication skills are an asset for coordinating with diverse teams and clients
  • A history of contributing to process improvement or technical innovation in substation design
