SCADA engineers perform design, programming, and support of Station Data Managers (SDMs), SCADA devices, and related Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). These systems provide real-time data and local or remote operating capability to support Operations, Construction, Field Resources, and Control Center personnel across Transmission and Distribution substations.

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

The Senior Engineer is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve.

SCADA Engineering Scope
  • Design, develop, and implement programs and configuration files for SCADA devices supporting metering, alarming, controls, and troubleshooting of substations and the Bulk Power System.

  • Support multiple SCADA hardware platforms, automation/computing platforms, HMI software, and communications protocols including DNP 3.0, SEL, ASCII, and MODBUS.

  • Develop communication forms, including IPCF, from high-level scope and project inputs.

  • Read and interpret protection one-lines, wiring diagrams, schematics, panel drawings, relay settings, customer data, and other project documentation.

  • Create IO summaries based on drawings, relay settings, and customer data.

  • Provide remote and onsite engineering support, commissioning support, and troubleshooting assistance to field resources.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate new products, firmware, hardware platforms, and SCADA-related tools for appropriate application and supportability.

  • Adhere to, create, and support SCADA CAD standards, documentation, processes, and procedures for internal use, external use, and compliance.

  • Interface effectively with P&C Engineering, Design, Field Resources, System Operations, Operations/Control Center, and other Duke Energy groups.

  • Develop SCADA configuration files for Transmission, Distribution, Customer, and Generation Interconnection stations.

  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) reviews on SCADA deliverables and maintain accurate project records and files.

  • Support internal and industry compliance requirements, including participation in NERC CIP walkdowns and yearly NERC CIP audits when required.

  • Enter compliance and non-compliance data into appropriate databases and perform related queries as needed.

  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Develop positive working relationships to coordinate work activities and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Support company goals and represent the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer III

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Senior Engineer

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read a design scope.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.

  • Basic understanding of protective relay settings and relay protection concepts.

  • Basic understanding of networking and telecommunications.

  • Basic understanding of communication protocols including DNP 3.0, SEL, ASCII, and MODBUS.

  • Understanding of troubleshooting, HMI software, automation/computing platforms, and SCADA hardware platforms.

  • Familiarity with SEL products.

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements including NERC CIP.

  • Proficient in engineering theories, principles, and practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Proficient in principles of project management.

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE).

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

  • Minimum 3 days in the office

  • Full Time Position

  • Ability for rotation on after hours support for emergent issues as needed during several scheduled weeks out of the year or as storms require

  • Located in Charlotte, NC - Plaza Building on 34th Floor
