What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Embedded System Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded System Designer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, embedded programming (such as C/C++), and experience with microcontrollers or FPGA architectures, typically backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, Simulink, Altium Designer, and version control systems, along with certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help professionals excel in distributed teams. These capabilities ensure the efficient development, testing, and deployment of reliable embedded systems in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded system design engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote embedded system design engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, communication barriers with cross-functional teams, and coordinating firmware updates across different environments. These can be addressed by utilizing remote access tools, simulation environments, and efficient project management platforms to facilitate collaboration and testing. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation also help ensure alignment with hardware teams and smooth integration throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded System Design vs Remote Firmware Developer?

AspectRemote Embedded System DesignRemote Firmware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of hardware and software integrationBachelor's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related; proficiency in programming languages like C/C++
Work EnvironmentDesigning hardware-software systems, often collaborating with hardware teamsWriting and testing firmware code for embedded devices
Industry UsageElectronics, IoT, automotive, aerospaceConsumer electronics, IoT, medical devices

Remote Embedded System Design focuses on creating integrated hardware and software solutions, while Remote Firmware Developer primarily writes and tests firmware code. Both roles require technical skills but differ in their core responsibilities and work focus.

What is remote embedded system design?

Remote embedded system design involves creating and developing embedded systems—specialized computing hardware and software that perform dedicated functions—while working from a location outside of the traditional office or laboratory. Professionals in this field use remote collaboration tools to design, develop, test, and troubleshoot embedded hardware and firmware for devices like IoT gadgets, medical devices, automotive systems, and industrial controllers. This remote approach allows teams to work together across different geographic locations, leveraging cloud-based development environments and hardware simulation tools to ensure seamless integration and functionality.

Job description

We are designing the grid of the future!

The Distribution Planning Engineer II will support utility distribution planning initiatives in a client-facing role. The engineer will work closely with utility stakeholders and EPE leadership to develop and perform computer modeling, technical analysis, and engineering studies related to electric distribution systems. Responsibilities include conducting distribution planning studies, short circuit and protection coordination studies, system design evaluations, cost-benefit and alternatives analyses, generation interconnection reviews, and assessments of distributed energy resource (DER) impacts. The engineer will prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations while serving as an embedded member of the client's planning team to help address system reliability, capacity, and grid modernization challenges.

How you can make an impact:

  • Provide client support on electrical theory, technical problem-solving, code compliance, and other technical subject matter.
  • Perform classic distribution planning studies including load growth projections based on historical trends, power flow studies in multiple software environments, planning criteria mitigation studies, and alternative analysis.
  • Identify expected system impacts from the interconnection of distributed energy resource technologies and determine appropriate and cost-effective mitigation measures where necessary.
  • Perform research and analysis work related to the proliferation of distributed energy resources and distribution automation capabilities including solar, wind, storage, electric vehicles, conservation voltage reduction, automated circuit restoration, and other emerging technologies.
  • Prepare reports, letters, one-line diagrams, and maps to communicate study results.
  • Process, generate, and maintain data as required for other engineering related studies.
  • Take responsibility for the timely completion of projects assigned while meeting all project quality and budget objectives.
  • Participates in multi-functional teams to obtain input, address comments, and perform studies.
  • Assists in developing tools, processes, and procedures that enhance engineering study completion.

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Master of Science or higher preferred
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience related to distribution utilities/power systems (i.e., electric cooperatives, municipalities, investor-owned utilities, research labs, etc.)
  • Distribution modeling software experience in at least one software platform (CYME, Synergi Electric, openDSS, etc.)
  • Strong technical skills and understanding related to utility distribution systems.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation
  • Proven team player skilled in mentoring and building strong internal and external relationships.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly with respect to explaining technical matters.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, and analytical skills.
