What is a remote embedded software engineer?

A remote embedded software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or specialized hardware, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. These engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams, write code for real-time or resource-constrained systems, and use remote tools to debug and deploy software. They may work in industries like automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, or industrial automation. Remote embedded software engineers rely on communication and project management tools to coordinate with their teams and ensure product quality.

What are remote embedded software jobs?

Remote embedded software jobs include embedded software engineer positions. As a work from home embedded software engineer, you develop embedded software systems for a variety of computerized devices. Your responsibilities start with assessing your client’s needs. You then design and code the embedded software, troubleshoot your software systems, perform research and test actions on the software, and implement software updates whenever necessary. Other duties include maintaining the software programs, documenting solutions to issues, providing the necessary post-production support, and reviewing the implemented system to debug the embedded environment and interpret error reports.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems programming (typically in C/C++), hardware interfacing, and a relevant degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in a distributed team environment. These skills ensure reliable software integration with hardware, efficient collaboration, and successful delivery of complex embedded solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote embedded software engineers often face challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with hardware teams across locations, and ensuring clear communication about design specifications. To overcome these, teams typically use simulation tools, remote access labs, and detailed documentation. Regular virtual meetings and collaborative platforms also help maintain alignment and facilitate troubleshooting in distributed environments.

Staff Product Manager, Embedded

Brex

San Francisco, CA • On-site, Remote

$280K - $350K/yr

Full-time

Posted 21 days ago

Job description

Product at Brex

The Product team is at the forefront of Brex's mission to empower employees anywhere to make better financial decisions. With a deep understanding of the business, we identify and scope the most impactful opportunities for Brex to tackle. We align cross-functional teams-including Engineering, Legal, Compliance, and Design-on key decisions, set strategy, and drive products from inception to launch.

What you'll do

Embedded is one of Brex's fastest-growing enterprise channels, bringing our card program into the financial software and workflows customers already trust. As Staff Product Manager, you will lead its next phase.

What began as a project is now a line of business. You will build the Embedded API and partner platform to unlock 10x growth, accelerate partner launches, and expand the financial capabilities available across the ecosystem.

This is a broad, commercially accountable Staff IC role across Product, Card Infrastructure, APIs, and Business Development. You will lead partner discovery and pitches, shape technical and commercial commitments, convert partner needs into reusable capabilities, and own outcomes through launch, adoption, payment volume, and revenue.

Where you'll work

This role will be based in either our San Francisco, Seattle, or New York office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work!

Responsibilities
  • Own the multi-year strategy for the Embedded API and partner platform.
  • Prioritize the partner segments, workflows, and financial capabilities where Brex can win.
  • Lead partner discovery, executive pitches, solution design, and technical planning.
  • Turn partner needs into reusable APIs, tooling, and integration patterns rather than bespoke solutions.
  • Align Card Infrastructure, API Engineering, Risk, Legal, Compliance, Business Development, and GTM around reliable, scalable launches.
  • Use AI to simplify the developer experience and shorten the path from discovery to production.
  • Make disciplined tradeoffs about what to commit to, defer, standardize, or decline.
  • Own integration speed, reliability, launch rate, payment volume, revenue, and partner expansion.
Requirements
  • A track record of scaling an API product, developer platform, or API-led business.
  • Strong judgment about developer experience and reliable, secure integrations.
  • Technical fluency in APIs, data models, distributed or financial systems, and architecture tradeoffs.
  • Credibility in partner discovery, executive pitches, and solution planning.
  • Commercial judgment that connects product roadmaps to adoption, payment volume, and revenue.
  • A founder or GM mindset that moves from ambiguous strategy to launch-level detail.
  • Exceptional communication and influence across technical, business, risk, compliance, and external teams.
  • Fintech, payments, issuing, or embedded-finance experience is preferred but not required.
Compensation

The expected salary range for this role is $280,000 - $350,000.  However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
