What is a remote embedded software intern?

A Remote Embedded Software Intern is a student or recent graduate who works remotely to assist in the development and testing of software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. Their tasks often include writing code in languages like C or C++, debugging hardware-software interactions, and collaborating with engineering teams through virtual platforms. The position provides hands-on experience in embedded systems while allowing interns to work from anywhere, making it ideal for gaining industry experience without the need to relocate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded software intern?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Software Intern, you generally need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, C/C++ programming, and familiarity with microcontroller architectures, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in electrical engineering or computer engineering. Experience with development tools such as integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and debugging hardware or simulators is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and learning. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to real-world embedded systems projects while adapting to remote teamwork and project demands.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software interns, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Embedded Software Interns often encounter challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, coordinating with geographically dispersed teams, and troubleshooting issues without in-person support. • Designing and implementing software solutions from scratch, including volume forecasting, yard truck routing, Labor Management Systems (LMS), internal orchestration, and physical machinery integration.

  • Partnering with warehouse operations stakeholders to translate real-world process challenges into well-scoped engineering problems.

  • Building backend services in Python and frontend interfaces in React or Vue, deployed on a Kubernetes-based platform.

  • Collaborating with the platform engineering team to architect, deploy, and scale solutions across all warehouse sites in North America.

  • Leveraging AI tools and techniques in your development workflow and as integrated components of the solutions you build.

  • Contributing to P&G's internal Warehouse Execution System (WES), a 0-to-1 initiative with high visibility and long-term impact.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to move from ambiguous operational problems to designed solutions with guidance

  • Excellent communication skills; able to engage confidently with non-technical stakeholders

  • Self-driven, curious, and eager to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment

  • Available to travel up to ~10% (primarily remote engagement with occasional on-site warehouse visits)

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes or containerized deployment environments

  • Experience integrating AI/ML components into production systems (e.g., forecasting models, routing optimization, LLM-powered features)

  • Background or coursework in supply chain, logistics, or industrial engineering

  • Experience in warehouse, fulfillment, or manufacturing environments
