What is a remote embedded firmware engineer?

A Remote Embedded Firmware Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains low-level software (firmware) that directly controls hardware devices, typically in embedded systems such as IoT devices, consumer electronics, or automotive systems. Working remotely, they collaborate with cross-functional teams using online tools and platforms to write, test, and debug code, ensuring the seamless integration of hardware and software. This role requires strong programming skills, usually in C or C++, and a solid understanding of hardware architectures and communication protocols. Remote Embedded Firmware Engineers must also be effective communicators and self-motivated to work independently from various locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote embedded firmware engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Embedded Firmware Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, embedded systems design, and a solid background in electronics or computer engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with microcontroller architectures, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and tools like JTAG debuggers or version control systems is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear remote communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These capabilities are crucial for developing reliable firmware, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and delivering robust embedded solutions.

How do remote embedded firmware engineers typically collaborate with hardware teams to ensure successful integration?

Remote Embedded Firmware Engineers frequently collaborate with hardware engineers through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and remote debugging tools. They often participate in design reviews, discuss hardware schematics, and provide input on hardware-software interface requirements. Effective communication is crucial, as firmware needs to be tested on physical hardware, which may require coordinated remote access to lab equipment or shipping prototypes. Regular updates and clear documentation help ensure smooth integration and address potential issues early in the development cycle.

What is the difference between Remote Embedded Firmware Engineer vs Remote Software Developer?

About Axon 911
Axon 911 brings together Prepared and Carbyne under Axon. Together, we are creating the only platform that combines modern 911 infrastructure with an AI intelligence layer-helping public safety agencies move faster, make better decisions, and deliver better outcomes in the moments that matter most.
911 is the backbone of public safety, yet the professionals behind it have long been held back by outdated technology. Axon 911 is here to change that. Joining this team means more than taking a job-it means helping shape the future of emergency response and building a safer, more connected world.
Your Impact
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to own the design, development, and validation of complex electrical systems for mission-critical, connected hardware.
As a founding member of our hardware team, you will have significant ownership across the full hardware lifecycle, helping establish the technical architecture and engineering standards needed to scale.
You will work across schematics design and layout, RF coexistence, mechanical integration, form factor, and hardware debugging, solving complex challenges across cellular and Land Mobile Radio (LMR) frequencies, power, thermal performance, and signal integrity.
What You'll Do
  • Electrical & Board Design: Develop mixed-signal schematics and drive PCB layout across application processors, RF transceivers, power management, battery charging, memory, and high-speed digital interfaces.
  • RF Integration & Coexistence: Design and validate RF and radio systems across multiple wireless technologies, addressing RF performance, coexistence, interference, isolation, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Mechanical Integration: Partner closely with Mechanical and Industrial Design to optimize board layout, component placement, antenna integration, and form factor within tight physical constraints.
  • Bring-Up & Debugging: Bring up, characterize, and troubleshoot hardware using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, power supplies, and other electrical and RF test equipment.
  • Production Readiness: Drive component selection, Bills of Materials (BOMs), design documentation, verification, and electrical readiness from concept through certification and mass production.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical direction to electrical engineering team members and external design partners, reviewing designs and driving hardware objectives to completion.
What You Bring
  • 7+ years of embedded electronics design experience and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline, with experience in high-speed, high-density, battery-powered, or low-power systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with PCB design and layout, RF integration and coexistence, mechanical integration, and hardware bring-up/debugging for highly integrated devices.
  • Experience across embedded subsystems, including application processors, microcontrollers, high-speed memory, power delivery, battery/charging circuitry, wireless/RF integration, and high-speed or wired interfaces.
  • Proven experience taking electronics from concept through schematic and PCB design, verification, certification, manufacturing ramp, and mass production.
  • Strong understanding of RF coexistence and interference across cellular and regulated frequency bands, along with signal integrity, power integrity, and electromagnetic compatibility considerations.
  • Hands-on experience with Cadence OrCAD and Allegro, as well as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, power supplies, and related electrical and RF test equipment.
  • Experience designing rigid, flex, or rigid-flex PCBs and working within tight mechanical and form-factor constraints.
  • Experience designing electronics to meet U.S. and international hardware, wireless, and safety standards and regulations.
  • Experience working with design partners, Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), or Joint Design Manufacturers (JDMs) and collaborating effectively across cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
Work Location
This position offers a hybrid schedule, requiring team members to work onsite at one of our regional hubs, located in New York City, Boston, or Scottsdale, Arizona - Tuesday through Friday.
  • Relocation Assistance: Relocation support is available for qualified candidates who are currently based in the U.S., authorized to work for a U.S. employer, and open to relocating closer to one of our regional hubs.
  • Fully Remote Eligibility: Full-time remote eligibility will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to accommodate specific needs.
